Have to disagree. Luck is a part but if you don't know how to play, it doesn't matter if you have a horseshoe up ur arse. You need to know how many hands can beat you, how to reel someone in, how to fish for hands and know what they have (or at least narrow it down) based on they're bets, understand the probability of your hands' chances of winning, etc etc Luck IS a factor though when say you and the other guy are chasing something with only the river card left and you're both all in. Dude, if you go down that path... what is going to happen is that you'll take your last 300$ to the casino and start playing 1$/2$ cash on a full table.

You will pick up 66 on the button...

UTG raises, next player says 35 to go.... cut off makes it 120....

You look at your cards.... and you get that hunch... you feel the six coming on the flop... but can you really call 120$ with a pair of sixes?....

No, he does not know what cards are coming... that's supernatural. Plus I don't even count the number of times he folded a draw in a big pot when he would have actually hit and taken all the money. He plays on present facts not future cards.

Yes Phil Ivey is what you can call an educated guesser in my opinion. How does he do it, he bases decisions on:

1. History with the player (s) is he a tight player, loose, experimented, beginner etc..

2. Player (s) behaviour

3. Betting patterns

4. Dynamic of the table

5. Psychological state of the player (s) i.e. is he on a high, is he tilting

6. Probably a whole bunch of other things.

By reading those factors correctly he is able to come up with the right decision a bigger

Re: Poker, there was an actual case years ago in California over whether it was a game of skill or luck.

It was decided that the same number of people playing over several hours would all be dealt an equal number good and bad hands, and because of the way the played them detrmined if they won or lost, it's a game of skill.

After seeing those PB numbers, you can throw math in the can. Poker takes luck and who has kahonas's. Phil ivey did'nt make an educated guess on fulltilt closing and taking his money.
