Thats a great way to be both safe and help the economy. MOST of those would be small or medium community banks that have strong local ties. A 250k CD helps their bottom line. They lend based on depoisits. More deposits, more lending. Most often they lend to the local community, its a great win-win.

If you win a mega jackpot worth multiple millions and you don't trust anyone with your money, there is a organization called CDARS that will put your money in simple CD's and spread out all your money(under 250 G's each) in numberous banks that are all FDIC insured. And you will only work with one bank and one account number. I tell people that I do business with that I believe in Frontier Justice just so they don't commence to doing anything stupid that's gonna get 'em hurt.

Especially people workin' in or around my house and property.

But I advise anybody that wants me to make my mark on paper the same way.

Good point with going with an established firm. But I have also seen several of the shows that show employees/brokers from these firms stealing also.

I suggest going LOCAL first. Look around for a good local financial services firm. And like several others have said- get reference's.

do a search on goldman/sachs and nj gov. jon corzine,

it may cause you to talk a closer look.

also lots of rich and supposedly smart people,

invested w/ bernie madoff.

I think you need to go with an established financial firm like Goldman Sachs or Credit Suisse etc.... They are accustomed to working with high net-worth individuals.

yeah just assuming a flat fee advisor wont stiff you with commissions could be a mistake.

ask the advisor what he gets out of ea and every sale he advises you , ie whats the agent fee,.

if he doulbe speaks, or tries the its not a commission its a... talk

then tell him to #%^* off.

they try all sorts of diversions of language so they can say its not a commission, like prize draws.

use flat fee only advisors,no commision people,

use 2 different advisors,and compare advice,

the company that has more conservative ideas is prolly right.

you control the money and check on it often.

as others have said,educate yourself,

you have time for this as you no longer have work for someone else.

keep watching cnbc,many people think its boring,

but i learned from watching it.

do background checks on them. interview them like your hiring an employee. never give them full control. always know what there doing with your money. best bet is to educate yourself.

You are going to either self-educate on investments or you are going to have to trust someone to look after your money.

I plan on simple investments that will earn me and my family enough to live on. Maybe mutual funds.

If you decide to let someone handle your investments, you should constantly check on it and know what is supposed to be coming in and going out.

There are a lot of good investment type of people out there that are trustworthy, don't be discouraged by a few bad apples.... [ More ]

I watched several episodes of this television series and came away thinking you cannot trust so called financial advisors with your money. With all this coming to light about the wealthy being robbed blind, how do you handle your hundreds of millions when they come in.
