If you ever hear of a clerk you thought you knew abruptly quitting and moving to some tropical island, you just might want to look him/her up and ask them to thank you for trusting them to check your winning ticket!

With all the lottery number information sources available (website, phone line, newspaper, email, store scanners, and radio/TV news), there is absolutely NO reason to hand a store clerk a ticket(s) which you don't know the winning status and magnitude of the win. And the fact y... [ More ]

that's why when I check my ticket at the scanner and then at the lottery website I would head straight to the lottery office. no need for the middleman(store clerk).

Sorry garyo1954 but that's not good enough! Some have been had their winnings stolen by clerks they

thought they knew . Please check your own tickets and don't count on clerks alone to see if you won anything.

There are many variations of this scam,it was even used in the tv show, the honeymooners,

2 guys in a park are argueing over their invention that cures baldness,

Ralph Cramden intervenes to stop what appears to be imminent violence,

the disagreement is solved by ralph buying their chemistry kit,

which of course is phoney,

then Ed Norton spills the bottle of H2O and Ralph says be careful w/that H2O,what do you think it is, water?

I don't trust the clerks or even the machine scanners (some scanners I notice only tell you that you've won...but not how much). I ALWAYS check my tickets against the lotto website. If I see I've won a prize then I check with the scanner....and THEN I go to the clerk. So by the time I get to the clerk I already know that I did indeed win something and I know exactly how much I'm supposed to be getting.

theres a scam where someone presents an envelope, they found with stuff in it. stamps, coins something possibly worth something. they ask the stooge what it is. then count it.

then a 3rd person comes along, another scammer, supposed unknown to the 1st scammer., and positively id's the items as really really worth something.,

they then try and sell it to stooge.

ie 3rd would say if i had the cash i would buy it off you, if you take to a bank it will exchange for. $,,,,,

I get my tickets in one of two places. I know the cashiers and they know me. So I'll grab a drink while they run them.

But if it were somebody new, or a new store.....definitely NOT HAPPENING

Some of those people testing the clerks acted like they wanted to be cheated. How many players give a clerk they don't know a few tickets to check and walk to another part of the store while they are being checked?

Reminds me of an old pigeon trick I saw many years ago when I was in the army. Someone would approach with a roll of money pretending to be new in town needing directions and help counting their money. I never found out how it worked because I never engaged them.

I was at a bar watching this (the best place to watch all news!) and so didn't get to hear it but just watching it was bad enough. The one clerk that was estatic, then suddenly quiet - OH, I thought it was a winner, but it wasn't. Yeah - right!

I rarely have the stores check my tickets. I always check on the internet. However, if I am unsure, I go to a grocery store, but I know that I'm probably correct - no winner.

Some time ago, I handed the clerk a stack of winning tickets, already counted, and added up. I had a list of scratch tickets that I wanted, and that would make the price break even.

Anyway, after adding my tickets, he said I owed him something like 60 dollars! After going over it with him slowly (with a caculator LOL) he finally got it. The whole thing took around 15 minutes, but at least it worked out.

True!! I watched all of them here on lottery post, I hope he comes

out with more shows about lotteries. I almost felt bad for the retailers in the California

episodess, they lost their lottery contracts and can never sell tickets again!

I laughed at the one store where the girl really did have a twin sister lol.

Sometimes you watch those cop shows and the suspect denies the crime and the

cop says you must have a twin , this time it was true, her twin sister really did to it

Another thing, don't get sidetracked. At the places where you can 'do it all' - gas, lottery, cigs, newspapers, etc....watch what they're doing with your money. Make

sure you know what winners you hand them and how much they amount to altogether. I turned in some odds and ends amounting to $36....the clerk rang up my

other stuff and my $36 wasn't credited. Not a big, big deal but it would have gone somewhere else. Who knows? On the next customers transaction...in the clerks

Same thing happened to me, CD.

I sent Sugarbritches (the little woman) in with a ticket with a couple winners on it one time while I waited in the truck. She came back out with the cash from the lesser of the two winners and said the clerk told her there was only one winner on the ticket.

I went inside and told the clerk to show me the receipt for the winnings. The clerk got the receipt and looked at it and said Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't see the other one! and then gave me the rest of the ca... [ More ]

Nikki...thanks for the GREAT REMINDER !!! Had a clerk recently claim the ticket wasn't a winner,,,,after pointing out that it came up on the lottery screen a winner for $8.00 she said, OH, I must have misread the ticket'...SURE ya did.. It's okay to trust, but always verify..

Yes, the California investigator who retired said most of them were honest but they were trying to weed out the bad apples.

A lot of the clerks appeared to be foreigners, I'm wondering how many of the dishonest ones were named Patel.

Missed the show..hope it was good....They scan our ticket and it prints winning ticket on the face of it and prints out another validation ticket saying how much we won. If it doesnt win, we can have the ticket back, here in the sunshine state.

I agree too rdgrnr. Every store I go in though offers them back to me whether

they win or not. I only go to certain stores though to check stuff, I don't trust

many clerks. Some are very good honest people, but just like anything else one

bad apple ruins the whole bunch.Thanks again win500 I really enjoyed it.

You get caught and the store loses it's contract with the lottery to sell tickets

and three years probation, wow! That one last guy with the traveling ticket I think his brother

owned the store because the officer said tell your brother he lost his contract to sell how awful.

It's just not worth it!! Stores who lost their contract no doubt lost a lot of business.

Someone on here said they don't trust the scanners either,

if you can't trust scammers scanners, then also check the newspaper and websites.

never rely on just one source, in addition to dishonesty there is also honest mistakes.

Me too!! I love how they have those fake winning tickets to check how honest these clerks are,

if those tickets are cashed in? BUSTED!!! They also showed the computer screen, there is no mistaken

if a ticket is a winner or not.

Even if the clerk says the ticket is a loser ASK FOR THE TICKET BACK!!

My state has a second hand drawing for losing tickets.

The gas station where I buy my lottery tickets always return them to me after they are scanned whether they are winners or losers, I don't understand why all places don't have the same policy. If they all did that then then the stealing problem would end.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. Saw a similar Dateline special on the same topic a few months ago from the NY area. They were catching sleazy

clerks who kept winning tickets, or told customers that the ticket was not a winner, and tried keeping the winnings. Was a real eye opener
