Scanning procedures probably vary state to state. In my state, as the tickets are sold they are scanned. Probably a secondary reason for this

scanning procedure, is for the retailer to track the total cost of all tickets per customer, similar to a grocery store scanning the bar codes. This

would be particularly important in a high volume store, where it could be easy to lose track of how many tickets are being sold per transaction.

As you mentioned however, probably not a bad idea

That sounds really crazy to me..scan my ticket before I scratch it? Maybe someone SHOULD check with their state lottery to see what the REAL policy is. Many places just make their own rules. They don't follow what the state law says.

After the intial batch ticket is scanned, no more scanning is needed to sell off the roll. There are records of the ticket numbers in the batch number probably located at the lottery headquarters in their terminal. In fact, I am sure there is such a thing because... [ More ]

The stuff of nightmares....thanks..

Anyway, if you look anything like your avatar, maybe that's the reason SOME DON'T scan them...get you in and out quicker.

Seriously, I think some stores just do record-keeping differently. That's all. However they do it, I hope you find a real good one. Good luck

I usually have my tickets scanned during purchase. Not each individual one, but if I have 2+ of the same ticket they will scan the first ticket however many times. I always just assumed it was the easiest way for them to ring them up, like when you're at any grocery store, the cashier can either scan the barcode or input whatever info they need for it to ring up correctly on the machine.

If you want to get the right answer I'd suggest just asking some of the clerks why they scan it.

Where I buy my tickets, everything is scanned for the cash register including candy bars and papers before I pay.

Here in Belgium, they scan when they are opening a whole roll of tickets.

That's a measure against theft. When you steal a whole roll of tickets and it's not scanned, you cannot receive your earnings.

A single winning ticket will not be scanned, they only enter a number (on the ticket) in the lottery machine to check it's a winning ticket.

In Oregon both Circle K and Big Apple stores scan the ticket as you buy it to keep track of what lottery was sold that day from the computer tills. But they have to manually enter in the sales of other games like powerball, mega millions, megabucks, pick4, lucky lines and keno. I think it just their way of keep track of how much lottery is sold on a given day.-weshar75

Not sure if they're suppose to or not, but every single roll purchased by the store contains a batch number (serial number). The commissions know how many of that particular tickets there are, how much they are, and where they are registered to ( the store). In my opinion, there's no need for them to do anything but tear it, hand it to you, and total your cost for it.

L.L.

They don't scan the tickets in PA as you buy them. After you win on one, yes but for your state, I guess it's a way to keep track of

the ticket count/sales by machine rather than by writing beginning/end numbers after a shift. They can just run a sales report to see

exactly what type and how many were sold. You can always ask them too.

I have always noticed that happening. The same clerk at this same store, NEVER scans the scratchers, everywhere else I go, every single ticket

is carefully scanned. I'm sure this is for keeping track of inventory and totaling your final purchase price.

My theory is that those who are not scanning, are either the owners and very good at keeping track of all the math and inventory, or they are on

the take from the stores till.
