I often have the scanner read SEE CLERK when I scan my keno tickets, while my MM and PB scan perfectly fine.

Maybe it was just the game, or a bad barcode, etc.

The point is, there is nothing you can do about it now, so instead of worrying, put your energy toward winning big in the future! :)

Personally I would never mail a ticket. While I can't remember ever having a letter lost in the mail, would I want to take that chance with a really big winner? I would just make the 3 hour drive to Austin and not have to sweat whether the ticket made it or not.

And I would never under any circumstances leave a winning ticket with a retailer to mail for me. Todd, I read that too, and I just shook my head and said ok, whatever . LOL.

I think you are 100% backwards on this, and I'm finding it hard to believe nobody else has mentioned this. I can't imagine anyone leaving their jackpot-winning ticket with the lottery agent, with the hope that they will mail it in. If you truly believe this is the right approach, I think you need to know that it is absolutely the WRONG approach!!

That's not my understanding. You can ask the lottery retailer to mail it in, but you can always do it yourself. You can also take it directly to lottery HQ. I would always do it myself.

If you really think you're right on this, please go ahead and post a link to the official PA Lottery Web site page showing that the retailer must mail in your winning ticket of an amount greater than $600.

I believe that is the procedure in NY as well. I think I've only had the clerk return the ticket to me once, and a few times I've been asked if I wanted a receipt. They can probably give you one for any prize won if you'd like.

It doesn't bother me that they keep the tickets. I've already checked them so I know if they're trying to rip me off, and once I've got my money, I have no need for the ticket. It does bug me when they try to keep my play slips, but that seems to be more of an absent-m... [ More ]

Possibility is one thing. Yes, the possibility exists. The way you presented it, though, it sounded like it was a lot more than a possibility.

These days the self-service scanners may tell you the amount won, but according to the OP, this happened several years ago. I don't know about California, but when the scanners were first introduced in New York, the only information they provided was whether or not you had a winner. I use to work with lottery machines at a grocery store. We have to keep a copy of the winning tickets for verification purposes but if I remember correctly, you can always ask for a printout of what was scanned. When the tickets are checked they say either winner or not a winner so I'm not sure how valid the excuse is in NY since I am not familiar.

PA rules state that amounts of $600 or more in pay out, the original ticket must be scanned , paperwork filed and the ORIGINAL CLAIMED Ticket must remain with the Authorized Lottery retailer for mailing in. So no, tickets must be authenticated, and therefore are not kept by the claimant. Imagine keeping your jackpot powerball ticket after claiming it! It just doesnt work that way...It must be turned over for authenticating.

I watched a dateline show about this one time. They used a fake winning ticket and asked the clerk if it was a winner and he said no and thenfake ticket was a million dollar ticket. Later on the clerk tried to go cash it and got caught. It's always important to check the numbers yourself even after scanning the ticket.

Not in my state it's not. The small 6 stand-alone scanners never say the amount in Idaho, even with the smaller wins. They always say see the clerk . The scanners on the vending machines do give the amount. I have no idea if they enumerate the larger JP amounts since I've never won one.

Actually, it's important to recognize situations where there is a reasonable possibility that somebody got ripped off, so that others can learn from it. A ticket that scanned as a winner and did not provide the amount of the win (and just said see the clerk ) is LIKELY to be a big winner.

There is no paranoia here, so try not to be too disappointed.

You are so right!!! I almost got caught like that. In my case, I never took my eyes off the ticket and I told the lady to give it to me so I could sign it. There were only 2 people in that room, me and her. I saw my 25 grand floating away.

Oh! You should always sign your name on your ticket!

Its yours because you purchase it but signing could cut down on any issue of ownership should

you somehow lose a winning ticket, just be on the safe side.

Why go through the trouble of trying to prove it's yours when all you had to do was sign the back?

A $20 bill is different from a lotto ticket.

Do you have a job? If so, what kind of job? In lots of places, the family members live together and have to pool their resources to stay afloat. Just do whatever you can do to contribute to the pot to get thru this rough spot. Don't rely on the lottery..

First of all, take comfort in the fact that you're not alone, many of us have had the same experience.

Secondly, chances are the ticket was worth whatever the clerk paid you.

It was so long ago there's probably nothing you can do about that particular ticket. But you can use it as a lesson learned. From now on, check your own ticket before you take it in. Dude relax, you are worrying about nothing. There are people here on LP who have had the winning numbers, and for whatever foolish reason or whatever act of god, did not get in to play their sets. I actually had one weird experience where i I scanned a ticket and it said not a winner. Now I know my winners and losers immediately when i see the results, so i made sure to give the clerk the ticket...PRESTO...it was a winner.

Not a money winner, just a free play...so like the NYL says...hey you never know.

Yesterday I cashed in 6 euros with Keno, but in a strange way.

I gave my ticket to the clerk. The clerk gave me the winning receipt without cash.

I had to ask for the cash. This didn't happen the first time, so they try to keep cash to my opinion.

Other times the machine said losing ticket. I asked to scan the ticket again, and it paid.

They can play this.

Here in MO, it became a policy to not give back winning tickets because of the very reason LB talked about up above. It got to the point that some low-lifes would try to reclaim the tickets at the next store down the road over and over again, wasting the store clerks time and the drama that came with it, usually the loud remarks, saying I never cash this, you're trying to cheat me hoping the clerk would give them the few bucks again, just to get them out of the store and stop making a scene. I don't know about anywhere else, but in Texas (and in Michigan if I remember right), if you have a clerk scan on their scanner, a receipt is printed whether it is a winning ticket or not. I watch the clerks, and I know how much I am expecting to get back. If the clerk acts suspicious or I get a different amount than I expect, I ask for the receipts.

I had the same problem locally and found out some clerks are making up their own policies in the same store. An old clerk told me she never gave winning tickets back to customers as per store policy and on another occasion a new clerk told me he was never told about it and gave me my winning tickets back so I stopped buying tickets there.

The KY Lottery ticket scanners give the value of the ticket too. They also have vending machines that give credits for tickets worth up to $25. Once a ticket is scanned and the credit is given, that ticket becomes worthless and no different than a losing ticket. The clerk may have got you for a few 100 or even a 1000 or so, but the odds are in your favor it was nothing life altering. If it was a jackpot, I think you have noticed something going on with them. Either acting strange or a little to giddy. (1) because they are thinking they are about to become a millionaire, or (2) they are going to prison if they don't pull this off right. Their demeanor would probably be based on if they had done it before, and how many times they got away with it.

Most state lotteries publish which stores sold jackpot winning tickets and I doubt a scanner would direct you to see the clerk if that ticket won the jackpot. Based on that, your ticket wasn't a jackpot winner but could have been worth more. Also, you are entitled to get your lottery tickets back from the cashier after they scan them. If someone ever tells you that they are forced to keep the ticket (even for a winning ticket), they are LYING and probably scamming you too.

Man I really hate myself now, I was a young guy that didn't know really how to play lotto. I know in Ca it say congratulations see clerk and it might have said a dollar amount but I dont really remember my mind is playing tricks on me. I keep thinking i won the jackpot or so!! It depends on the state. But all the ones I have seen tell you the amount you won directly on the readout. The only time it doesn't is when your prize is really big (greater than $5,000). [Edit: or, as Dead_aim said, greater than $600.] Then you have to see the prize amount in the little receipt that prints when the clerk scans the ticket, and it usually tells you that you need to fill out a claim form.

Don't know about all scanners, but the scanners here in MO. give a dollar amount until you go above the payout of the store, which is $600 here. At that point, the scanner says to see store clerk, so yes, in all likelihood, you got ripped off! It is a shame we have got to the point that you can not trust anyone, but at the same time, it takes only a moment to check your ticket at home these days.

Yes, you probably got ripped off. Always check the numbers yourself at home. Lottery Post has all the results, so you should be able to easily check all your tickets. Lottery Post also has all the payout amounts for all the games, so you can see how much you won. You can double-check at the scanner, but don't make it your primary means of looking at your tickets.

For some reason this is killing me. Several years back I just started to play super lotto and I scanned my ticket on a lotto scanner and it said congratulations see clerk. I don't recall checking the ticket numbers and gave it to the clerk and he scanned it and said I won $10 or $11 dollars I don't remember exactly. Just wondering if he possibly ripped me off, like i might have gotten more money and he just decided to swap the ticket. Don't know why but i Keep thinking about it. For some reason... [ More ]
