The charts at lotto report show the ticket sales in each state and the Powerplay sales. The sales in the Virgin Islands were $34,868 and $10,628 and I'm assuming that means 17,434 tickets were sold and 10,628 of them used Powerplay. Virginia sold 1,039,642 tickets and 117,631 used Powerplay so it looks like a much larger percentage of players in the Virgin Island bought the $3 ticket (61% to 11%).

Going by the chart on the PB site (is that what you used?) it shows Powerball and Powerplay as two headings.

I'm taking it to mean Powerball is a $2 ticket and Powerplay $3.

The Virgin Islands is the only entry with more Powerplay.

Virginia 27,099 3,377 30,476

The entry above the Virgin Islands is Vermont. Virginia is typical with many more $2 than $3 tickets.

You bought an advanced play. I hate going to the store every week to buy lottery tickets. I usually save the money and buy all the tickets in one shot. I have more chances of winning when I do that. It is not guaranteed though.

The shotgun approach applies whenever you buy more than a single line quick pick or self pick. Buying multiple lines is cool if you increase your chances of winning without spending extra money.

They are having a promotion in new York of buying a $10 powerball ticket to get a $2 free ticket. I received my $2 free ticket after spending $10 for a ticket. I will have to win $100 to have a positive return on my powerball ticket. Spending more than $2 puts in a negative return unless you win at... [ More ]

If you got a free ticket it sounds like the shotgun approach worked. Now if that extra ticket is a big winner it changes the math on your cost of the original 5.

I bought a $10 powerball ticket and received a $2 free ticket. It will not change the fact that each powerball ticket cost $2.

If I'm reading the chart on Lotto Report correctly, about 1/3 of the tickets sold in the Virgin Island used Powerplay so it looks like more of the $3 tickets won something than the $2 tickets. Looking at several drawings, the Virgin Island sales average about 1 out of every 3 tickets use Powerplay compared to Florida that averages about 1 out of ten.

From the chart in the link in the OP there's no doubt that there's a huge gap between $2 and $3 tickets but I found this a little odd:

Virgin Islands

Powerball 162

Powerplay 270.

Of the total prizes paid out ($11,181,615), 45% went to just five winners and the $5,081,515 paid out to all the match 3 + 0, 2 + 1, 1 + 1, and 0 + 1 winners will probably be spent in the next drawing as some of the $100 from the 4 + 0 and 3 +1 winners. Bet most of the $7 winners will add $1 and get 4 tickets.

I don't know if this jackpot will trigger the same type of betting frenzy we saw with MM, but another roll or two will.

According to the great and wise THRIFTY, buying even one ticket is a fools bet. No one will really win any jackpot, with the exception of a few

asset managers from somewhere in New England.

I say we should all follow in his path, and just let the asset managers, investment bankers or the rich white venture capitalists keep it all.

Let the lotteries continue to decide when and where all the jackpots will be won. Let wealth re-distribution continue along on its merry way.

Does anybody think that just maybe, the more tickets played the more winners and the more tickets played just perhaps the more jackpots?
