Nothing wrong with playing the lottery as long as you can play it within reasonable amounts. When you go through adulthood, you will notice that it is sometimes better lucky than to be good at your craft. It can help you get out of a hole of a dead end job or even bosses that push you around, or even help you make the down payment needed for home ownership (part of the American Dream). At least that is the reason I play the lottery myself.

Now I tend to just put down $2 on super lotto and $2 on fantasy 5 (if over 100k)

Havent bought a scratcher in months

Its not about wasting half of your free luxury money on the lottery

I am willing to say that there is folks on here that couldve gone to Europe or etc , paid Round trip flight, stayed in a 4star hotel for a month if they saved that money instead of playing the lotto.

Hardly at all, the scanning feature only benefits to those that play high volume. It is nifty but scanning too many winning tickets by accident locks out your account for 30 minutes.

The Assembly Bill 142 in 2009 that took out the mandatory 33 or 34 cents per every dollar played to education is the best thing. Other than that I liked the Raffle back in 2003, but they never brought it back after one run, it was the best chance at winning $1 million ever offered by the CALottery.

If the merchant can read the 16 digit code as well as the Roll ID and Ticket number, they can enter all those numbers to cash out. If not, you have to go to the district office even if it is for a measly TICKET or $40, you get a check in the mail since they do not have cash in hand.

2nd chance rejects winners, only losing codes are kept track in their system.

I bought a 30th Anniversary Scratcher. It became wet on the bottom and the numbers for the $100 - $1000 match game can not be read. The bar code used to find out if is a winner at a scanner also probably ruined.

If I enter the ticket in the 2nd Chance Drawing will it be rejected if it is a winning ticket?

What other options are there to find out if it is a winning ticket

Thanks Chacha! I meant to say I have not won something more than $100 in many months which is where the odds get steeper.

I plan on still playing but sparingly as I have these days. Being honest about these things, the win like this will eventually run out when 60% of the return is allocated for the common prizes, in this case, the top prize alone takes a whopping 11% of the 81.4% return. Last week I bought 2 more 30th Anniversary tickets, #11 and #12, both were TICKET prizes so I immediately redeemed them for #13 and #14 which was a dud and a $50 winner.

Today I bought 2 more and finally won this time

Ticket #23 was for $50 (single number match) but when scratching off #24, I was thrilled to see the CALottery logo for the Win All prize. I added it up to $400. Have not won $100 in a very long time.

The lottery depends on frequent players not infrequent players. Again we all know the lottery preys on the lower income levels for support. And they walk a very very thin line when it comes to compulsive gambling. Bottom line though the lottery doesn't reward frequent players. Instead of being a weekly player as I was in 2014 my play level in 2015 has dropped to every couple of weeks. A point of clarification. My original post had nothing to with the state requirement to report the winner to the media. The story came from an interview the winner gave to the local TV news media it wasn't the media reporting a California Lottery press release. Winners aren't required to give interviews after winning.

Ralphie, the jackpot winners in this state have the option to remain anonymous. The top prize list is updated daily, but the Lottery need not report the winner or where the ticket was sold, although there are notable exceptions which can easily be found on the site. In any event, finding a winning Scratcher over $100 is incredibly hard to find and in my 16 years of playing, has only happened to me three times.

I'm in NY but I would imagine it's the same in most states - when a person wins a jackpot prize in a lottery the lottery must report it to the media. Whether or not the winner is an infrequent player or not is besides the point. They are just advertising the fact that someone won the jackpot.

I totally agree, the odds are so stacked above the $100 prize tier that it does not reward the frequent players with the big prizes. Despite the surge of sales from 2009-2012 from AB142, people are starting to realize it is not a winnable game no matter how much they play.

To see an infrequent player winning is just further insulting to the regular players thinking they will have a chance one day.

The jackpot reset earlier this month when it got up to $66 million and I've put in $10 in each draw for the entire summer, but not playing anymore lately. I will play again if the jackpot reaches at least $30 million.

The $30,000 special drawing for the 30th anniversary is nothing special since it is for just ONE winner. SuperLotto sales are no where near strong as it used to be despite all these promotional incentives the CALottery is offering.

This was long overdue as it has been requested by players all over their twitter feeds (probably Facebook too) for a while. It might have been very useful when 2nd Chance was at its peak 2009-2012, when there was no limit at the time. Now there is a 500 ticket limit, it does not take much effort to punch in the codes anymore and to reach the limit (I used to exceed 500 in the past, now I put in 10 a month at most).

80% is too good. Those odds include all the big prizes altogether as a whole.

The payback odds for playing 30 cards is more like 50%. Unless you have one of the bigger prizes, which is in your case the $200 ticket.

The last two high denomination games $20 7's Playbook and this $30 30th Anniversary games have 12 million tickets printed compared to the other high end games $5million jackpot (33.6 million), Million $$ Match (24 million), and Ultimate Riches (18 million). These games can probably end quicker, or if the $30 game does well, more tickets will be added on. The regulations state if all top prizes are claimed which there are 4 of them, the remaining games have to be pulled.

Thanks for doing the calculations for us! We'd used to have someone do it for us couple of years ago.

The CA Lottery reports 80% instead of the 81.4% you've calculated since they expect retailers to force the customer to play another $30 Ticket rather than giving back $30 in cash to do what they want. Most retailers here give cash back to the players, and the places with kiosks have to give out cash.

Awesome that you are quick with these things, it I checked the CA Lottery website the last two days and its not there anymore. Not sure if you run a web crawler on the lottery website to notice subtle changes. It will be out soon enough next week.

I saw a sample ticket and it said the cash odds were 1:4.66; I was afraid this was going to be peppered with free tickets and $30 cash break-even prizes. But although it looks like the ticket thing came true, I'm glad this ticket didn't pull an Ultimate Riches/5MJP/Million $$ Match and come loaded with break-even prizes. I'd still play sparingly, given the high cost of the ticket.

Picked up 5 scratchers Sunday afternoon. Two 50X the Cash, two Million Dollar Jackpots and one Deluxe 7 Playbook.

Won $100 on one of the 50X the Cash. Won $25 on one of the Million Dollar Jackpots. Got a push on the Deluxe 7. So grand total $145.00 cashed in this afternoon.

Again on the losing tickets the number 14 was present, but no 14's on the Winners.

With the winnings I bought four 20X the Cash, each one was a loser and the number 14 was on each losing scratcher.

We are 3 weeks away form the $30 game to debut, I should have specifically wondered if you had the payout table odds information. Seems like there will be bunch of TICKET winners, I wanted to see how saturated the payouts are to either go with 3 $30 tickets a month or stick with the 3 $20s a month (maybe 4 if they come out with a good $20 game). I will do it if the $500 prize will be slightly easier to win since that prize requires no tax reporting.

For purchasing a full pack of scratch cards, here's my experience:

I bought a full pack of $10 Big Money last week, $500 in total. Not surprisingly, there's no big winners in the whole pack but plenty of $10, ticket, and $25 winners. The biggest prize was a $50. In total I got payback around $460. So compared to former posts talking about low payback in full packs I thought I am kind of lucky.

I haven't heard much about the $30 game. I actually got some information on it the same day that you posted the picture up. I brought the bundle of paperwork home with me but after you posted the picture, I figured it would be a waste since most of the information is retailer related. Thanks for providing that info to us! $180 is just 30% payout on a $20 game pack. I did recall that I once got less than half on one of the 3 packs I've ever bought.

My worst experience was 19 losers on a 20 $10 sequential tickets.

Was wondering if you heard anything about the $30 game coming out this month or even possibly a $50 game later on

The lowest I've seen a $20 game pack pay out is ~$180. One of my regulars who plays A LOT used to buy multiple books of the $20 games and she kept meticulous records on them.

More recently, she still plays a pack, but I'll hold a pack to the side so she can pull from that exclusively that isn't kept in the regular display. Thanks for the info. I'll definitely take that into consideration next time i play. Scratchers have been good to me lately. Won $500 from Ultimate Riches 3 weeks ago, $500 from Hit $500, and a couple 3x $100 from Million Dollar Tax Paid. But so far nothing bigger than $100 winning from Deluxe 7's.

yup a lot of people make that mistake - books usually actually pay out around 55-60% (some are as low as 50%)

there are states that guarantee minimum amounts in a book - California to my knowledge is not one of them, so do not be surprised if you ever buy a book and only get back 30 something percent - has happened to others elsewhere

Thanks for sharing your story about the booklet purchase.

Do not be mislead by the 75% overall payout, it does not mean you will get that much in return. About 65% of the payout on most high denomination games ($5/$10/$20 tickets) are allocated to the break even TICKET prizes up to $100 prize. Anything over $100 mark becomes very difficult to win with steep odds and that makes up the other 10%.

This is going to be like that stinker Ultimate Riches game. Bonus spots aplenty, but the majority of prizes are Free tickets/$30 cash with strings of losing tix.

In other news, a $50 Scratcher is likely to hit stores by the end of the year. At least according to my nearest retailer.

I am FUC*** done with the CA lottery! Have been an avid scratchers player for years. Today i had $180 extra to spend, bought 9 x$20 ultimate riches...all sequental. Not even one winner, are you kidding me? There is something wrong with that. I am so done with the lottery, this is just so stupid. I am wasting my money. Granted it wasnt the best idea to spend all of it on lottery (dumd mistake on my part)....but could i at least have had ONE winner. This is BS. Goodbye lottery, you pissed me off

Regardless of how many entries are bought for the drawing, there is a guarantee that each drawing will go up by $1 million each time.

Consumers have shown that they are into the big jackpot games, so they'll play that instead. Even though SLP is at positive expectation, it is still selling much less than Mega Millions and Powerball. The 5 out of 5 with no Mega or Power pays out well normally as a near miss, so there is appeal to that too.

I'll play scratchers if SLP goes away.

There have been many games in the past well before Lucky for Life, and Luxky Life that had an annuity for the top prize. It just was not publicly disclosed on the ticket like those games. In private the CA Lottery offered a lump sum that was well less than the total annuity amount.

I would estimate that the lump sum for the $30 game will be $6 million.

Ha! Totally no 14! Only time I won $100 on million match 14 41 were in the winning #'s. But the win was the 100 fast spot with the stack of bills symbol :)

for what it's worth (free ticket or nothing) I feel like I might have a winner when I have uncovered (both) 14/41 in the winning #'s before scratching the rest. And I almost always scratch the fast spots last.

That is correct, the CA Lottery contracts GTECH (mainly crosswords) and Scientific Games (mainly number matching) to produce the scratcher games.

Also by looking at the font, you could tell which one produced it. GTECH uses thicker coat, and it is noticible on the Playbook, Ultimate Riches, Lucky Life, and the crosswords.

I wonder if the new $30 will have that sticky green coat like ultimate riches and luckylife. I have to work a little harder on that ultimate riches coat... But I've noticed the super sticky coat is when they get the games from the Canadian manufacturer...

now that exactly what i want from a $30 ticket - approx 80% payout of higher and reasonable odds

still want to see the breakdown of the odds for CA but even NC getting in on the $30 ticket action shortly and also think that u got lucky that it nowhere near as bad as NY's $30 (anything above $100 is very hard to win and the next prize up, $500, has odds close to 800 to 1 where I have seen other states having odds of close to 200 to 1 for $500
