Do the people who win a lot on scratch tickets spend a lot of money to get those winnings?

I've spent about 10 in scratch cards in the past year (I only do scratch cards on impulse occassionally). I won 2 the other night. So not very lucky for me

Rule of thumb: For every $100 winning ticket posted, $1000 was spent to get that win.

If someone posted a $500 winning scratch ticket, they spent $5000 to get it.

Anyone who consistently posts larger scratch ticket winners ($200, $500, etc) is spending a ton of money on them. It has little to do with luck and everything to do with statistics. It's one thing to get a larger winner once in a while, but to consistently get them means they are buying a lot of tickets (with the vast majority of large quantity ticket buyers losing much more than they are winning).

onlymoney, I couldn't have said it any better and I've definitely made the same comment in many of my posts. Pick 3 and Pick 4 are, without a doubt, games that can be controlled with the right combination of numbers, money, timing, and PATIENCE.

In terms of scratch-offs, the higher dollar tickets will always pay more back more often. But, it's still a really, really bad idea to spend hundreds of dollars at a time on ANY scratch... [ More ]

Are your 1000 to 1 tickets $1. in price ?? Because the AZ $20 scratch ticket is 600 to 1 for the $500. prise but the cost of 1 ticket is $20. so that is actual odds per dollar of 12,000 to 1

I totally agree with that. Those two bit tickets suck.

My only point was that the 500 dollar wins I've seen have higher odds than 1,000 to 1, actually If I remember correctly, they go well above 1,000, so I'd rather try to beat a game which has a cap of 1,000 to 1 with pick-3.

Of course not everyone plays the 20 dollar tickets soley for the 500 payout, they're happy If they win 100 bucks, but for me personally, I like to play a game which I have some control over, not pre-determined payout... [ More ]

But from my experience and from reviewing the prize structures on-line, of the higher priced scratchers, the higher payout odds are far better

than your nickle and dime tickets. Just IMHO.

The ones I've seen that have 500 dollar payouts as one of their winners go into the thousands to 1 odds. Why not just play the pick 3 which doesn't go over 1,000 for a straight hit for the same win amount

I don't play them very often, but I only play the $20 scratchers when I do.

When I buy them in MA, the odds are about 1:2.99, which means overall every ticket in three, is a winner of something. Not too shabby.

To me it's obvious they spend a lot to get more wins. Most people like to brag about the big wins but don't tell you how much they spent. And If they do tell you that they only spend a few bucks a week on scratchers and win 500 bucks every two weeks or so, they're either the luckiest people on Earth or lying. I prefer to believe the latter.

It is all about timing and the tickets in your area. Some folks on here win thousands but they also spend thousands. Then other may spend hundreds one week and a few bucks the next week and hit $500+ tickets. Some others spend hundreds or even thousands and win nothing because their area has crappy tickets. I am one of those who have spent hundreds and won a few hundreds but lost way more than I have won. I get the occassional $100 ticket here and there without spending much but then eventually

I worked at a convenience store and watched people spend a

hundred or more a week and bragged about their $20 win.

It was sad to see them spend more when they started coming

out with the $5, $10, and $20 tickets. One lady bought three

$10 tickets and was estatic she won $10.

The deal is it only takes one to change your life.

Probably depends on the type of players.

Some spend hundreds a week, only to score an occasional $20, $50 to show for it.

Other occasional scratchers, might hit for $200, $500, or even $1000 just out of dumb luck.

In my case I might win every now and then on a scratch ticket but continue to stay on budget and wonder if some people might be winning more because they are able to spend more trying to get the big wins.
