By the way, every year two weeks after El Gordo the lottery in Spain holds another raffle called El Nino . (El Gordo is The Big One and El Nino is The Little One .)

Compared to El Gordo, El Nino is indeed smaller, but still it awards 840 million (US$1.1 billion) in prizes. The drawing is on Jan. 6, 2013.

For those interested, the same lottery service is offering tickets using the same sweet ticket-selection interface. The raffle basically works the same way as El Gordo.

I haven't heard anything yet but it looks like the prize might be a refund according to this from Wikipedia:

Just so everyone is aware, the cutoff date for this lottery using the El Gordo ticket service is Dec. 21, so there's not much time left. If you're going to go for it, then you probably shouldn't wait anymore. It's possible they'll run out of ticket inventory before then.

Each of the 180 full tickets (each containing 10 shares) that matches the jackpot number wins 4 million. That's a total of 720 million awarded just for the jackpot. Then there are all the lower-tier prizes, that are each worth a good chunk of change. After you add up all of the jackpot prizes awarded and the lower-tier prizes, there will be a total of 2.52 billion in prizes awarded.

there are 180 tickets ea with the same number that goes in the draw. if that comes up all 180 tickets win $4mill euro ea.

those 180 are divided into 10ths, and thats what sold to us. for $45. us, or to spannish at $20 euro ea.

if the 2 tickets you buy are in the same 100 000 number , ie with same 12345 for example, you would have a 1 in 100 000 chance of winning. but on winning would get 2/10ths. making it 800k euro.

The only that sucks is having to pay local taxes on foreign lotteries. The visa card company would report to IRS...

It is my belief that money earned outside the US should not be taxed in the US.

Many different credit cards will block a transaction based on the merchant code.

Some subprime cards (no offense intended) will limit spending on certain transactions due to the specified merchant code.

If you spoke with the credit card company to find out the code, you could then speak with the Raffle company and see if they would authorize your card under a different merchant code.

Sometimes they use a back up processor or a different merchant code category to get around this type of

From my knowledge of the company, you would meet a company representative in the country and they would assist you in claiming the prize. They did that recently in New York for a $250,000 Mega Millions winner. I'm sure it's the same everywhere they work.

Bought 1, but wanted 4 different numbers. They should put the tickets in a big list so you can scroll up and down instead of shuffling. Credit card company says it was billed to Illinois. Anything related to overseas puts a red flag on my card and blocks it. Girl must of thought i was nuts when i told her it was a Spanish raffle. GLLLLLLLL

So How?! My credit card won't be eccepted and I even tried using something called skrill. Thought it would let me since I give it money and then use that account to buy lotto (from TheLotter) and it still says My bank stopped/does not allow the Transaction.

Of course there is a markup. There is always a markup on El Gordo, because it is a much more intensive job for a service to handle.

But I think you'll find that the service I linked to is actually a lower price than competing services, many of which are pretty shady and don't offer features like the ability to buy specific numbers in advance. And it's a lot cheaper than buying a plane ticket to Spain.

It's also quite a bit of a markup. According to Wikipedia, one decimo (share) costs 20 euros, which, depending on which currency converter you use, comes out to between $26.15 and $26.20. So basically The Lotter stands to make quite a profit on this game alone.

A bit more info that I have just learned: because the company has to buy the tickets in advance, tickets will start to get limited the closer to the draw it becomes. If you're interested in buying different numbers, you might want to check back with them from time to time, because as new tickets are purchased, they are posted in their system.

How many times do they pick a new number? Not sure what you mean. It's one drawing. The ticket numbers you see for sales are tickets that the company has already purchased, and have not been bought by someone using their service yet. You can click the little shuffle button below the tickets to see other numbers.

El Gordo is not for the faint of heart (price-wise), but the odds are not too shabby. The payouts are huge.
