I would like to see people on welfare not be allowed to buy lottery tickets, but I can't imagine how that could be enforced.

I agree.

The problem isn't poor people playing the lottery (or playing at casinos, buying alcohol and/or cigarettes). The problem is using government (taxpayer) money to do so.

I already have a HUGE problem with all of the people that should be working, but instead are living off of government handouts! Don't get me wrong ... I guess they mean for the poor who are not on welfare........Just because one is poor doesn't mean they are on welfare. I know lots of poor folks that would probably qualify for welfare, but to my knowledge aren't on it......but i also know lots of folks who are on it and do need it as well as folks who are on it but don't really need to be.

Really? How do you ban welfare recipents? The lottery is a tax on the poor. In MI, we had a national news story last year of a girl who won 1 million from the lottery and stayed on food stamps for months. It caught up with her and they sued her, made her pay back the money and in the end (sad ending) sho over dosed on drugs. Point is, that's a good percentage of the lottery player.

The Michigan Lottery annual report has their players as:

Under 25,000 annual income 10%

$24 - $50 at 25%.... [ More ]

I can understand your logic. Even though I don't agree with welfare recipients buying lottery tickets, I also don't agree with them being able to purchase alcohol and/or cigarettes. If they can't afford to buy their groceries, I don't see how they can afford to purchase these types of items. HOWEVER, if welfare recipients are denied being able to purchase lottery tickets, I have to wonder how much sales will drop. So true. Gambling is not a basic need and if you cannot gamble with your own money then you shouldn't gamble. I mean whats next? 2 weeks tax payer paid vacations to Tahiti?

Welfare should be limited to food, shelter and healthcare and that is only when there is genuine need.

Most states have always had laws for how people getting public assistance should spend the money and to obligate lottery winners to pay their child support and taxes but some find ways to work around them because they aren't always enforced.

Because the government has no money, the People have money, the government spends our money. By allowing welfare recipients to gamble with their government checks, they are simply doing that gambling with your money and mine. Remember that, the government is nothing without its people.

everytime i visit this website i take a few minutes to read the titles of the stories on the home page. i have noticed some thing. there have been alot of talk about forbidding poor people and people on welfare from playing the lottery. what is with them who plays the lottery? poor people do. surley not rich people. they are trying to get the people who play the most to stop playing do they not realize how much money they are going to lose if this happens. what are your thoughts on this? there w...
