It may sound like over kill to you but that is considering worst case historical inflation over 70 years. Most people don't throw inflation into the calculation. Who knows what inflation is going to be or what else will happen.

$100,000,000 after taxes for someone who is 21 is only based on past worst case.

I figure the amount by considering historical worst case inflation and the number of years until I reach 90 and then I calculate the after tax lump sum.

As an example, using past inflation figures, If I were 21 and used 90 as an expectation then I would quit if I won $100,000,000 after taxes.

My actual number, of course, is not that high.

At somewhere past 70 or 75 I'd probably just quit anyway.

Anything can happen but this is as good a way to figure it as any.

wouldnt it make more sense to quit the year AFTER you win (cuz all losing tix 'count down' taxable amounts?)... so i probably, based upon that, would play MORE after I won - during that same calendar year that is... after that? i would quit.

I voted for 10 million, but I would PROBABLY keep playing the lottery just for the thrill of it.

Actually ... since there are 11 casinos within just a few minutes of me (Northeast Oklahoma) ... after quitting my job, I KNOW that I would be spending more time at the casinos. I would just be playing more for the entertainment, less for trying to make money.

Great example.. The couple who won twicw in one week in Arkansas.

The first scratch off was for a million dollars. The left their cabin to buy more scratch offs.

The second was for $50,000.00. They reported having no plans for the money, other than saving for their retirement.

The point is, the scratchers were fun, why stop after a million.

OTOH now you have so much $ it does'nt matter.

You can really amp it up if you win alot....I mean control yourself...but I think if I won like the base powerball jackpot....I'd love to go in a quick stop and buy a whole roll of $20 scratch-offs...or go to vegas and play just enough and long enough to get some really good comps...like show tickets or room upgrades...
