Actually one of the major reasons the IRS doesn't care about the 599 issue is because the government doesn't have the manpower to enforce it, and if it did, it would'nt be worth the expense, but one thing to be clear about, it's not because the IRS didn't care about small amounts of taxable income.

The lottery does not keep track of winners $599 and under.

When you turn in your tickets (I know!! I know!! Always sign the ticket!!)

you don't sign the back of a Pick 3 if you want tax free winnings, only cash in one or two at a time.

I have seen people win big from our store (where I am a regular) and all of them redeemed it from the State with taxes withheld. As far as IRS is concerned gambling winnings can be offset by losses which if you are a regular player is almost expected.

Trying to avoid the Taxman may not be a good idea. Your bank transactions over $10K are reported and can be a trigger for the Taxman to check on you. If you skip depositing it in the bank then you might find it hard to keep big amounts in your h... [ More ]

If I had hit for more than 10 tickets str8. I would cash in one at a time or as needed. I hit 611 and 245 for $5. I cashed all 5 in at one time. There was no problems at all.

I'm guessing if someone bought 200 tickets from the same place at the same time and it hit, the lottery would take a look at the camera in the store. I'm paranoid so I would think they would keep a copy of it. I'd constantly be thinking the IRS is going to be giving me a call.

I agree with what you wrote above. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the only point I was making was to clear up what I see from various people who write in forums claiming that anything under 599 is NOT taxable income. It's a myth that's been circulating as fact not just in the forums but people I meet or personally know when the subject arises. Those people really believe it's legally not taxable, and that's the misconception i'm trying to clear up.

Easy just google - income from whatever source derived.

FYI If you live in Hawaii and pay Hawaii income tax you cant deduct any gambling losses on your Hawaii income tax! So if you buy $5,000 in tickets and win $50 you have to declare that $50 on your Hawaii income taxes and you cant deduct the $4950!

I agree, you're not making it up; it's just that the code is written for those who believe they must declare a $2 scratch-off as gambling winnings. To put in a proper perspective, it would be almost impossible for anyone playing a slot machine to know their winnings especially when they put $20 into the machine and leave with nothing. It's possible for them to win and lose hundreds while playing.

I believe that the reason that state laws allow redemption of p3 tickets in the store with no paper trail is because they need to in order to attract adequate play- if every win was taxable at the time of redemption there would be a lot less play. I would be fascinated to see if there was a selective prosecution lawsuit if they decided to go after a $100,000 p3 winner when they ignore all of the lesser p3 winners that don't declare their winnings when filing their taxes. With 10 million I'd take it to the lottery office and gladly take my (tax) lumps. But with that much money, I'd have enough to buy everything I need and most of what I want.

With only a $100K win, I could only pay for a couple things in the first place, then take away that $30K in taxes and all the sudden I'm down to choosing just one or two needs that would improve my life a bit. Probably couldn't splurge for any wants.

That's why I made the example worth $100,000. That is worth the IRS's time to track down. In a city the size of Boise, you'd have to go to the same stores a few times to get them all cashed, hence more risk of a snoopy clerk deciding to turn you in.

I wonder if the lottery cooperates with the IRS? I wonder if they'd release their video of who bought the tickets if the IRS asked, and find out you had all 200 winners? That's assuming they have cameras in the machines like ATMs do.... [ More ]

We don't pay any taxes on prizes under 500 here in Michigan, they don't take names and we don't fill out forms, I won 700 once and had to go to the lottery, I filled out the IRS form and when it came time to do my taxes, I didn't have to pay tax on it because I could prove the loss.

According to state lottery rules, players can cash $500 value tickets without getting a W-2G so it seems like you could legally cash all 200 tickets at various stores. I'd try to cash about 50 of them, but would cash the rest at lottery headquarters. That way you could avoid any potential IRS questions.

Any income is taxable. Even if you help your neighbor paint his house for 7 hours and he pays you 15 bucks an hour, that's still taxable income. Basically ALL income is technically taxable.

Not in Florida. I cashed in 5 Pick-3 straight tickets years ago in a PUBLIX supermarket. The manager went to the vault and gave me 2500 bucks.

I'd be very tempted to cash in 5 at a time, but the problem of putting it in a bank would discourage me. I'd have to stash it in my house and that won't cut it.

Any amount over 10 grand deposited into a bank raises a red flag and the bank is obliged to inform the IRS.

Normally I would say that it's only fair to pay your fair share of the tax, but the lottery rapes people financially when they win. Either by bad payout percentages, or the multitude of pre-tests and post-tests. Take your pic... [ More ]

Because of high crime rates some stores have a sign saying the cashier never has more than $250 at the store. One time I had to cash a $200 scratch off win and the cashier had to go to the back of the store, I guess where they keep the safe, and came out after 5 minutes with my money. It was only $200 for all that drama haha

I've been to stores that won't immediately cash anything over $20. Instead you get a money order. I've also been to ones that simply point you to the nearest store if you try and cash a $20+ winner. These are chain stores too, not some family owned one.

With my luck finding those stores to cash a $20-$100 ticket, I'd never find one that would give me $500.

Here in Virginia you have 180 days to cash in a winning ticket. Whenever I hit for a big sum of money on pick3/4, I usually cash my tickets in at a grocery store because they always have money.

$600 or less can be redeemed at any retailer. $5,000 or less can be redeemed at the agent plus locations. Any thing over that you have to go one of the 2 lottery offices. If the retailer has the cash they will cash as much as you have in winners. If they don't, the stores I go to will ask me to come back the next day and they will cash them.
