There no such thing as free money, it might be cheap but it's not free. Sounds like you're are getting what you deserved if you accepted a $100 tip from a store clerk. Give the $100 tip back to the clerk, say be seeing you and find another store to buy your lottery tickets.

Our store has heavy foot traffic of scratchers. So much, the clerk collects losers and occassionally finds a winner. He then uses these to play starting with the big games, MM/PB, then Cash 5/Pick 6 until he got hooked with twice daily Pick3. Once he won 10x str8 on a Pick3 and tipped me $100.

Today he's stalking me everytime I win on a scratch off. I kinda hate it but I feel bad if I dont. The Lottery is really addicting and spares no one. Even the clerk who just makes minimum wage.

Otherwise, I spend enough on a weekly basis, that my small wins don't cover my losses ... so they're not getting anything from those.

As a person who has had several customer service jobs in his life I'll give you my opion.

It varies, it really does. I've worked with people who stared of as nice charming people who smiled at all the customers and wished them all a good day. Only to be turned cold and callous by people who wish to take out their bad days and miserable lives upon you. I've also worked with people who were unhappy before they began working thereand the job only made things worse.

I very well could be wrong (often told I'm by clerks jerks) but maybe being a jerk is a quailifier for the position.

All the lottery clerks I deal with are pretty rude and they act like they are making an effort to wait on you...and they seem disgusted that I never buy anything else. Yet, every other type of retail clerk I deal with in a non-lottery capacity is much better. So the lottery clerk gets 0$ from me. I'd rather give any tip to the homeless.

PS: And off the topic but I am predicting the Hungarian Cardinal becomes Pope.

I always tip when I hit $500 on a scratch off. I tip the clerk $20 for cashing me out. (Usually it's the same Publix store by my house. I go there because the clerks let me keep my winning tickets. I always tip when i have a hit of 100.00 or more, usually a quickpick cash 3 ticket or when i have a big hit and they will cash out multiple tickets.

The most I ever tipped was 500.00 when I hit 5 of 6 on the lottery a few years back.

I would tip. Only because 95% of the time I purchase my tickets from the same vendors. About 3 or 4 different ones. But they are all friendly so yes I would tip the person that sold me the lucky ticket. I would tip about 1% of whatever I won...So if I won 20 million I would tip $20,000.

We have something to compare to in the service sector where the size of the tip might depend on if the service is poor, average, or superior. Purchasing lottery tickets could be measured the same when the wagers are somewhat complicated. I don't see any reason to tip the clerk that happens to be there when cashing a winning ticket for the same reason I don't tip a bank teller for cashing my check.

It depends on the clerk.

There are some that I see often and who are always friendly. Others I see often and are grumpy and then a few that I see once or twice. The first kind is the one who would end up getting a tip.

How much can't be said until I see the amount I won and I know exactly what person sold me the ticket.

I agree. Tipping should be outlawed. Whatever job you have, you should do it to the best of your ability. Don't expect a tip only a thank you. It's getting to a point where tipping is mandatory and it has to be 10-20%. It really sucks to be in the service sector where tipping is the only way you can make ends meet. I would tip if I won the JP. The places I buy my tickets (there are two) the clerks are always friendly and helpful so I would be glad to tip the clerk who sold me my winning ticket.

However if is funyuns, then i might consider it (heavily dependent upon whether its a .25 cent bag or a 1.00 bag)

And if the clerk is eating Dominos Pizza, then its mandatory to tip.

And if the clerk happens to be eating rib steak or lobster, then he deserves the prize money instead of myself.

P.S.

Its also ok to tip if after the guy picks his nose, he eats it. Otherwise no tip

It irks me though when a clerk tells me to remember them if I win big. Makes me think they're the kind of people I can't stand - cheapskates.

No, clerks and stores aren't authorized to pay out big sums of money.

Last week when I matched 5of6 for $1500 in Ohio's Classic Lotto, the store manager was very helpful with me filling out the claim form which I had to take to a bank in another town 10 miles away where I paid a $10 fee for its services.

I wasn't going travel back to the store to give the clerk and store manager a tip. They'll just have to wait until I win a jackpot for a nice commission from the state for selling me that... [ More ]

No. I've seen around when someone wins a huge jackpot, the store gets a commission. That's enough for them. :)

Anyways, in New York... Bronx retailers are 99.9% grumpy. Manhattan folks are nice.. Queens folks are the best... They make conversation and don't mind punching in a lot of numbers in the machine. Still wouldn't get a tip though lol.

I would tip the clerk if I won with a quick pic...even though the machine chose the numbers...but the size of the tip would depend on how much I won.....If I am choosing my numbers and I win big, I'm sure I still would if it was a clerk that I liked.......

I say it depends. I frequent the same store to buy my lottery tickets and have gotten to know the 3 clerks there so if I won ya I would tip them because I like them. If it was anywhere else where I didn't know the clerk I would say no simply because I always go self pick so the clerk has nothing to do with me winning or not. Recently someone won $8K from the store I frequent and the guy tipped $300 to the store clerk who since become a friend. I know others like the guy who won on 100 str8 Pick3 tickets and didn't tip a dime to the guys.
