Let's say you are in with $2 today in a Powerball pool with 499 other people. Since today's jackpot estimate is $50M, which you so graciously pointed out above, how much would you hope to win if one of the pool's 500 tickets were to match all 6 numbers drawn?

The Jackpot is $50 Million.

Which makes $50 Million the correct figure.

So we'll go with that for all intents and purposes.

And not to be a nitpicker but...you spelled variable wrong too.

It would have been better to qualify that $175M number with a reminder that it's a varaible jackpot, one that starts out lower, but often exceeds $175M. $50M is really no more correct than $175M.

my plan for a website pool system would be that everyone buys their own tickets, they are all their own tickets and no claim or understanding to pay any other pool member anything is understood as being the overriding rule of the pool.

people would post their chosen or played numbers to the pool filter. and if those numbers are already played then it is high lighted and new numbers can be chosen. as more people enter, someone in the pool is likely to win but at no point are they obliged

That has to be one of the dumbest ideas I've read on LP and probably illegal. And worse you're suggesting the owner of this site has nothing better to do than keeping track of lottery poll with possibly thousands of participants, trying to figure out who is in and who is out, and a potential law suit from the members who were out if the pool happens to actually win a jackpot.

Be careful! If you let rdgrnr hold the money AND the tickets, there might be a problem. I heard that if he can get someone to watch the store here for a week or so, he hopes to see for himself the conditions in those police states up in northwestern Europe. If he takes the tickets with him, and you win, who knows what those kind of people might do to him.

Really, the only way I would do something like this online is everyone just buy the same numbers. But I can't do that anyway as I am from the UK.
