In Louisiana, we have 180 days to claim a big prize. In my state, a prize can be claimed using a trust, and that's how I would do it. I'd probably continue to live as I do now, in a small house, driving my 3 year old economy car, and just enjoying a quiet life. No big spending spree here. The only big purchase I'd make is probably a new car for my wife, but it won't be anything flashy. Her car is 12 years old and it's time she had a new one.

You would? If you waited a year in California there would be NOTHING to collect. MM PB have a year limit to collect either jackpot winnings. Your winnings will be given to education projects which lm sure you would not mind while you left holding the bag.

Lottery tickets in Ohio has to have a claim filed within six months of the drawing. After sixty day the cash option is no longer available for those tickets that have the annuity alternatives.

I'd expect that any bill to allow winners to remain anonymous will only apply to drawings after the bill takes effect. Even if the law is written to apply retroactively to winners who haven't come forward yet, it's possible that it could be successfully challenged by somebody who wants the information. If today's laws says that the information about winners of today's drawing is public information, then it's public information whether the state already has it or has to wait to get it.... [ More ]

Assuming that you would stipulate the wait would be only 6 months to find out if the law passed in states where you only have 6 months to claim the JP, and the wait would in no way jeopardize the claim, I would. And in the meantime that would give me a few months to rent a cheap apartment in another state and start a name change just in case. It seems like most of these are passing, so the name change probably wouldn't be necessary but I like to have all my bases covered.

I voted yes and that would be baring any unforeseen circulstances, but i can see some Twilight Zone type scenarios in this one.

JP winner attempted to wait a year, vanishes, no one know where the ticket is (they don't have it with them). That or an accident or a coma or something. Yikes!

In my state the temp. anonymous bill is waiting on the govener's desk, so I'd wait a short time.

Otherwise this would take the patience of a saint,

and I hate my job situation.

Of course I'd have to find out if the new law applied to me retroactively before I start that wait.

I agree! I have not read the language of these proposed bills, but are they typically retroactive( grandfathered ) in terms of application?...i.e. if the bill passes tomorrow, does it apply to anyone who wins the lottery from that day forward or does it include people who have already won and not claimed it yet.
