For some weird reason, in general, ticket sales have simply been higher for Saturday draws than they have been for Wednesday draws - last Wednesday's draw (4/3) sold 5 million less tickets ($10 million less in sales) than last night's draw.

As for the PB jackpots, with the increase in ticket sales from California, PB jackpots should be fully funded at around the sixth draw in this run (assuming no winner Saturday or next Wednesday), and at around the fifth draw in future runs.

I don't think so. The previous PB jackpot of $50 million ($31.2 million cash) was underfunded by ~$13 million. The lotteries would have to sell over 35 million tickets for this draw to push the jackpot higher than it is.

I only submitted the story, the Chief Bottle Washer decides if it's newsworthy.(guess it isn't..)

It's only a small record. The LA Times reported that the 3.1 million sales shattered the previous first-day record set by Florida, which debuted Powerball in 2009 and sales topped $1.5 million that day, and also spurred some other business in the process. I'm sure other records will fall in the future with CA in the PB mix.

Just splurged on this first draw because it's the first Powerball in CA. After this, will only have 1 line on each PB draw unless the jackpot is over $200M or so.

I figure there are probably a lot of other people doing the same thing, buying a lot more than they normally would on the inaugural PB draw. That's kinda the reason for the poll. But now wondering why there are so many discards.(anonymous haters?)

The cash value for current PB is 38.9 million dollars. How much does the jackpot winner need to pay for the federal taxes? The online calculator I posted wouldn't let me enter an income for more than 10 million dollars.

There is no California state taxes for lottery winners.

I recalculated the payment plan based on 2012 tax rate.

I used the 2012 version of marginal tax rate calculator from the same website.

Whoa Jon- you put down some serious cash for a first time dude. l had said that l would wait till Wednesday but that was not to be. l pulled into a gas station today and somehow found myself looking at the powerball slips and bought 3 tickets. l'm 2 days early but whose counting. In any event l have not seen lines in my neck of the woods for PB. However if when the JP is at $200mil plus, l think one will see lines going around the block .

that sounds about right. The problem I have is we are going to assume for the next 30 years, federal taxes won't rise and California will never tax lottery winnings.

If you did this analysis last year, the top tax rate for federal was 35% and then what ended up happening

I will be getting my tickets tomorrow. I am still not decided on how many. I'm thinking I'll just wait until I get to the 7-eleven and see what I feel like spending. When I buy my Super Lotto tickets, I get my numbers (two lines) and quck picks. I'll probably just go for quick picks with the PB. And I realize I am better off buying MM considering the cash payouts for both but I want to be in on the first California PB drawing.

You can't force a win. Brute force seldom works. (well, except for the discontinued MA Cash Winfall)

I've seen some people drop hundreds of dollars on Jackpot games like Superlotto and Mega Millions. I myself never played more than a couple 10 line tickets even when the jackpot was really high. Funny thing is, you never see one of those huge jackpot winners being a power player like that with hundreds of picks. Mostly some poor schmuck that only played a few quick pick lines.

The odds of matching all five numbers in RC5 are 1:575,757 and the town has 25,000 people of which I figure 1000 play the lotteries some times.

State wide we've had a couple or so PB jackpot winners and a few PB 5+0 winners, so there's still hope.

if you looked at the picture of the lottery slip that Jon D scanned, there is a section on the bottom for ADDITIONAL QUICK PICKS and you can choose up to 5 additional QPs.

It is upside down so it may be hard to read.

You can fillout 5 self picks and then fillout 5 ADDITIONAL QUICK PICKS to get one ticket of 5 self picks and 5 QPs

Sounds like you thought buying 100 QPs would be luckier than 20 players buying 5 QPs each.

I live in a small town that sells nearly a 1000 tickets for our Rolling Cash5(5/39) game every day and no one in town has ever matched all five winning numbers since the game started nine years ago.

To me, both games will be about the same: 50% return, extremely hard to win 1-in-175M jackpot games, with return of 5-10% during typical play, so you don't want to play much of it.

Both MM and PB are pari-mutuel in CA, like all other draw games. On the surface, it seems like we are getting shafted on 5+0. But the trick is the amount rolls over so that prize on MM is often higher than $250,000 and will probably often times be higher than $1,000,000 on PB.

In CA you sure can get 10 lines on MM, I've done it many times before.

I'm assuming PB will be the same, since the playslip is the similar layout. You get 5 plays of self pick or quick pick, plus select up to 5 more additinoal QP lines for a total of 10 on one ticket.

In the other states, paying $2 per lines for a PB ticket guarantees the player matching 5+0 wins $1M, what are Californians guaranteed?

A $2 per line MM ticket may be a better deal for them not to mention they can win the jackpot with the bigger cash value with a $1 ticket.

I don't live in California and I would choose to buy some MM tickets rather than PB.

In a perfect world California would have to wait until Powerball returns to it's base jackpot of 40 million before being allowed to play.

And that is as it should be, because the way it is now they will be playing for a pot that was built without any help from them.

That is why there are some lottery winners that get into financial hardship, they never think about how much the government will take. The Powerball is at $60 million annuity or $38.9 million cash value. If there was one winner from California and they chose the lump sum, they would get to keep about $23.5 million after 39.6% federal income tax. Luckily, California doesn't have state tax on lottery winnings.

Didn't matter what the jackpot was, I would still play 10 lines even if it was just $40M, just for fun to see how it is the first time. Going to play 3 lines , no more no less. The present PB jackpot is almost identical to the MM jackpot but the payout is lower as Whiteballz put it..When it gets above $150 mil, l probably will get 5-10 lines at the very most. That winner from Arizona won half the pot with 5 lines even though the convenient store clerk wanted to sell him 10 lines.He was adamant 5 lines if you please

All I care about is the cash value and right now Mega Millions has the larger cash value and tickets are half the price of Powerball.

So California Powerball players: how many lines will you play for the first draw April 10th? More than or same as you play Mega Millions?

Sure the jackpot is *only* $60M right now, but will likely increase several million from Cali players contribution by the time the draw comes around.

I'll probably play 10 lines, as if it was a larger Mega Millions draw. 5 SP and 5 QP on one ticket.
