While not as big as MM/PB, look at tonight's draw for our CA lotto game: (30 31 32 34 39 +6)

Nobody won the $8M jackpot because who in their right mind would choose white balls like that.

Granted, our SuperLotto Plus has only 47 white balls, but still...it has happened before and will happen again.

When the Texas Lottery first started, some guy got several QP on a ticket and two of the lines were identical. There was an article about it w/ an interview of a college math professor who said the odds against that were the same as winning the lottery. He went on to say that 1-2-3-4-5-6 had the same chances of winning as any other number. My mind understands but my intuition prevents me from playing numbers in a row. Yeah, most people wouldn't. It's just food for thought, something fun to think about.

The numbers on the balls are just a way to identify them. You could just as easily put the faces of top celebrities or athletes on them and bouncing ball game would be the same, only that the perceived associations would change from numbers to people.

Would you pick: Woods, McIlroy, Scott, Rose, Donald. No those are the top 5 golfers in sequence, that would never come up, right?

Or: LeBron, D-Wade, Bos... [ More ]

I agree. Even though the odds of that set winning are just as likely as any other ... it just seems less likely that such a well grouped or even a sequential set would win.

Even at casinos, when I'm playing a game that requires picking numbers , I never pick well-organized sets.

Maybe not MM, but Powerball has:

But a group is just an artificial construct, caused by arabic numerals and a decimal number system. Take the same 59 balls and play the game in China with chinese characters instead, and the group goes away. Same with any lines drawn on playslips, grids, etc. The balls do not care.

I understand. But to my knowledge all 5 drawn numbers have never been from the same group, correct? I'm not saying it can't happen. Just, that its unlikely.

Yep, when you think about it, the numbers don't really matter. I call this, the balls do not care theory:

The balls do not care,

about which numbers are painted on them.

The balls do not care,

if they're adjacent or in sequence,

that they're a product or sum, or occur with such frequence.

The balls do not care,

if they're one number off from you,

that they're odd or even, high or low, or just way overdue.
