It was a rhetorical question. And if I was so concerned about being scammed, I would call the lottery HQ itself rather than relying on a message board. For thats the most appropriate route. Without a shadow of a doubt, he will confirm this more so than by a post. By the way no one insulted him, they attacked the question. Being to sensitive nowadays, makes it harder to tell the truth. The answer is no and for the same reason the store doesn't keep half of the jackpot winnings. I've heard stories of clerks charging handling fees for wins over $100. The obvious is to contact the lottery commission, but based on the number of stories we see, it's unlikely they are doing anything about it.

The best advice is to cash any size prize at a large volume store or a store where know the owner.

Stores here print a payout slip that shows how much you won. Some clerks will show you the slip without asking, some you have to ask.

If this happened that clerk has to be among the dumbest crooks in America. He could lose his job, the store could lose customers, get bad press and ultimately, lose its license to sell lottery.

You can't beat all that for $2 with a stick.
