You'd think that PB and MM could just change the rules saying from now on, the state the ticket was sold in may not claim it. It will be added back to the JP and if you don't like it, then leave.

I think if I had to dwell on that possibility I'd lose my mind. So I'd rather think that this person knows they still have 5 months left and they're getting their affairs in order.

Plus, I don't see why unclaimed money should be turned over to the states in the first place. They are already making billions (so they proudly state) from the lottery without needing the boost.

I think with that kind of money, you don't make any big ticket purchases until after you claim it. This winner lives in a small town, if he/she suddenly started driving around in a lamborghini it would be a dead giveaway.

Every state I've lived in requires you to divulge your name to the public in order to claim the JP, so family (and everyone else) would find out sooner of later. No getting around that.

If I won that, the attorney would be called and set up a blind trust... even with that said, friends and family would soon catch on and maybe not be able to keep their mouth shut. With that kind of money, you can't avoid all family... when they see you're living a multi million dollar estate all of a sudden and have a fleet of exotics, they can figure it out

Assuming they didn't lose the ticket, then they're probably doing the smart thing, getting all their affairs in order before claiming. Setting up accounts, alternative mailing addresses, interviewing lawyers, accountants, financial advisers.

They're going to have it worse because they live in such a small city. 13,000 people. They're going to be bombarded by neighbors showing up at their house if they don't also get a place to lay low until after the craziness has died down.

It's quite possible that he/she/they are getting all their affairs in order...possibly all the legalities and perhaps looking for a place to relocate to before they come forward....

I'd be doing my best to get everthing straight too, but don't think I could wait any real extended amount of time before claiming that kind of money because I'd be worried something would happen to me before I got a chance to enjoy it so I'd definitely get all this stuff straight in record breaking time... Apparently they're not related to my relatives. And no, it's not about being afraid to say no. I can do that just fine. The problem is that some of us are related to people who wouldn't think twice about causing physical harm and even death if they thought it would get them more money.

And some of us who don't have that problem are just private people. It's nobody's business how much money we have or don't have.

If it was me, I'd still be researching whether I could change my name, and have the lottery only release my new name. I'm a little concerned they'd release any AKA you've had in the last year. A name change takes a couple months in most states. If I couldn't change my name, I'm sure I'd still be changing phone numbers, finding a safe place to live that's not in my name, interviewing lawyers and accountants, etc. That would take a few weeks at least.
