Here is a good reason why you never trust those machines. Always check you numbers online.

The checker machines are not 100% accurate, but close.

It's always best to manually check your tickets...

Those machines you speak of would have resulted in lawsuits from companies only to eager to get their hands on MILLIONS of Dollars.

I have scanned tickets which i knew were small winners and seen the machine say Not a winner and i am like not so fast... I believe some people throw away winning tickets without double, triple, and manually checking tickets..
