Think understood the question. The government is taking 2/3's of the lottery winnings and no one here mentioned that forced charity{Medicare, Social Security, Wars, Pension Checks.} Just wait till the next president runs into 20%+ interest rates inflation. They will pass laws to take 90% of the lottery winnings then and yall will still be talking charity

I'd rather not hand large chunks of cash over to a big charity because so much of it goes to administration. I'd rather play Fairy Godmother and give to those I see as needing a helping hand, i.e., paying for college so someone can get ahead in life, fixing someone's house when they can't afford to, medical care for someone, etc.

Twenty years ago hospitals in my area were owned by the community and people regularly contributed money or left part of their estates to to them to buy equipment and or to expand but now they have all been taken over by private for profit organizations. Why would anyone give their money to a private for profit organization

When you pay the bucket load of taxes on your win you are mandated by the government to give money to charities that they decide to give your money to. Thus it is not a personal choice it is charity by government mandate.

You are, in effect, outsourcing a good share of your charitable giving to the government whether you like it or not!

A few years ago the question was If you won a lottery jackpot how much should you give the clerk who sold you the ticket? . Eventually most everyone decided the question was BS and no one owed clerks anything extra for doing their jobs.

I'm sure most will come to a similar conclusion concerning this question too. Giving to charities, churches or any other organization is a personal choice.

I think you're splitting hairs. I don't own livestock? Do you? Our system of worth isn't the same as it was two thousand years ago. I don't have a farm, or grow anything. What I do have, or would have, is money. 10% of that goes to God (if you believe in biblical scriptures). How that gets interpreted, I think, is up to the individual. If that person believes it means local church or a faraway church, or Christian-based charity or school system, that's where it goes.

I would start my own charity and appoint myself and family members to the top paying positions. Some of these charity have positions that pay a half million dollars a year or more. That way I would be giving to charity, helping the family and saving on taxes too.

Several posts recommended checking out any charities you would give to.

This is a must as there are a lot of well-known names that are scams out there.

A start would be to do a Google search with the name of the charity and the word scam and see what comes up (example: United Way scam or Komen scam ).

Too many national charities have the wrong priorities with too much of donations going toward high salaries and fancy buildings. The people that need it may only get a very small

I have yet to find scripture taken in context that says God requires present day Christians to give 10 percent of their income to local church. That is a complete misinterpretation of scripture. Iwould set aside $30 million dollars and set up a trust invested in interest bearing investments. I would then at the end of the year take the interest income that is earned, and then divide up among my favorite charities. This way, it will be an ongoing charitie that will be around long after I am gone.

According to christian economic scripture God owns it all but requires you to give 10% through your local church. You shouldn't feel guilty if you don't give to other organizations. In my opinion if you invest the money in stocks, money markets, or a business you will end up helping more people that way. Most charitable contributions end up going for administration costs anyway.

First, I guess I'd try to find a church willing to accept the 10% in tithes. They all say that gambling is a sin and we are not to play the lottery, so not sure if they'd take it. Then I plan on giving some to all the schools I attended so they can expand and I'll set up scholarship programs for a certain number of kids to attend for free.

These folk collected a $319 million Mega Millions check back on 3/25/2011- how is that classified not a Big Game?

$656 million Mega Millions was won on 30 March 2012, split by three tickets: Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland. Cash payout $474 million.

Before I donate a single red cent, I would have to analyze how much of charity receipts go to administration and how much the CEO is being paid. I also want to see the operation.

I would have to search high and low to find a church that does not preach money tithing (according to Biblical scripture, tithes were only food stuff like wine, oil, crops and livestock).

I would definitely give. How and how much depends on jackpot won and the advice of tax and investment team. There would definitely be money for charities, though. I already have favorites that I support on whatever level I can:

Texas Childrens Hospital

Feeding America (parent to local foodbank networks)

Wounded Warriors

Animals Angels

Several equine rescues

I honestly don't know. I used to know but the current administration wants to fine people for giving money to charity. However it is only supposed to apply to people above the 28% tax bracket. In one of the books about what to do when you win the lottery the author gave an example of two people donating $50,000 to a charity. One gave $50,000directly, the other set up a trust. The trust kept on giving and giving.
