Hitting big money I would be gone from this country.

Maybe the Outer Hebrides. Pretty secluded out there and nice people. Unless the people have changed since I was there last.

We don't have gated communities in the rural area where I live. Some have been known to put a gate house at the entrance to the driveway back up to the main house.

If I won enough money definitely wouldnt mind bumping shoulders with the well off in a gated community........ and if I didn't like it I'd happily relocate to somewhere else.

Sorry if it came off like I was arguing with you, just commenting in general.

Actually, knowing many within the Old Money set, their fortunes have been split heavily amongst all of their descendents after several generations and most of them don't remain that well-off unless they end up marrying New Money - in a lot of cases that I've seen.

Gated to keep the vultures at bay? Yes. If I like the area and the house suites my taste.

Gated to rub shoulders with Old New Money? No. I couldn't care less about those people and their money.

Move higher into the mountains? No. Texas Hill Country, yes, but higher mountains in Texas would be Big Bend, and that's too far west for me.

Well all you have to do is be active in charity and you may even be able to get on the advisory board...not too hard to do this with charities, especially if you make a larger donation. For me, it would heavily depend on the restrictions and the type of people residing there. I know how some subdvivisions want all the homes to be uniform in appearance. The blinds must be a certain type, the plant within the landscaping must look a certain way, you can't have curtains...etc All this is a turn off to me as I've been exposed to it already. and Old Money today did exactly what to earn their money? What gives them the right to look down on someone who has lucked out into wealth just the same as them. They cling to this belief that their money is superior because it's established, likely because of an insecurity in their standing as they have seen their influence on American society dwindle to nothing - no one cares what Old Money thinks today.

I live where there are HOA rules and the only problem/concern I have is that they need to enforce equally. I have a neighbor with a pile of kids toys, bikes, etc. piled up in her outside doorway (we don't have enclosed private porches) and they will wait till many complain about it yet for others, they'd be on them in 2 seconds.

Old Money doesn't think much of sudden waelth jackpot winners.

They didn't do anything to earn it and may or may not keep it.

In another thread someone mentioned the book The Millionaire Next Door. In that book it was pointed out that most millionaires in the U.S. drive American cars.

Just go to any of the jackpot fever threads and see what kind of cars potential winners fantasize about buying.

Old money tens much more to view the 'other wealthy' as them and us.
