I've also had people tell me crap when I go to play at my stationary store, lecturing me on how it's a waste of money playing the lotto, and I don't even know these people, and I say to them, if its such a waste, well then how do you explain the people that win?? If I ever won a jackpot prize, I'd probably would wait it out til the noise calms down, then quietly hire an attorney, a financial advisor and CPA. This way it would give me time to process and think of my approach or even if I decide to tell anyone. I'm a Pick 10 player here in New York so the lottery here doesn't publish winner info on Pick 10. I find that's a good thing

I play the lotto with my mother but my sister does not play or her husband. They want a cut and so do their kids. I am reasonable and will give them money because they are family but no one else is getting anything. I will help my family out any way possible if I have it but not anybody else.-weshar75

All panhandlers are not created equal. Some do it for survival, and some do it as a means, for fleecing and taking advantage of the good nature of the unsuspecting public. There was a documentary, a few years ago, that exposed some of these individuals. Some of then have homes costing over $250,000.00, some drive automobiles like Mercedes Benz and the like. These individuals make it very difficult, for the public, to discern who really needs help.

I have all these folks in PA, that used to know me about 15-20 years ago...some wish me NON-EXISTENT. (Not dead, just, non-existent.)

I have two Ex-GF's that if they found out I won....would try and move as close to me as possible...not so that I'd notice that they INTENTIONALLY did so....but, to let me know that they were around...and INTERESTED in me again...(they dumped ME!)

I've heard people make such statements when I was buying tickets but they aren't people I know or associate with and they wouldn't be worth knowing or associating with after I won a large jackpot either.

Before you tell a soul that you won anything, go around to all your friends and relatives and tell them you're in a jam and need to borrow 500 bucks.

You'll find out who your real friends are that way.

Use their responses as criteria to determine who gets something and who doesn't.

You'd have to be careful of people with such demands, if they're someone that wouldn't be on your gift list anyway. If you just laugh it off and you win, they could claim that you and they had an agreement that you would give them some of your winnings. Money turns some people into jerks.

Besides, if some people view themselves as too smart to waste their money on the lottery then they shouldn't want to dumb themselves down with any of someone else's winnings.... [ More ]

I would ask a series of questions to validate the reason (s) behind the request first. This is only providing the person that person has no real bad history of being frivolous with money and does the right things with it priority-wise.
