You start small in your plans then move up. Ok, 100 sq ft might be small. Measure each room and move up until you find the right size. For us 1000 sq ft is PLENTY big. Live in the country where you have septic and a well. You have water. Then add insulation and solar and no bills. If you are a hunter, shoot/ fish for meat. Grow a garden. I would LOVE to be off the grid! Out of the rat race! That is the LIFE

I was lucky enough to get a dinky pension. Got old enough for SS. Son collects SSI. Family pools money and we live well. Learned to live poor. Saw a sign the other day. a Quarter Lb hamburger starting at $3.99. Great! 50c of hamburger for $4. $4 feeds the whole family! A big $16 pork loin @ $1.99/lb goes to 5 meals for us. Tracfone costs me $12 per month. Cut my elect bill in half and live better. We like a small place to live. So I can live WELL on $1 mil. Living poor the last few years is was

Most businesses are giving everyone they release from work for whatever reason severance pay now (secretaries to attorneys). But you have to sign the agreement where you promise not to malign them, not to discuss the terms, etc, you agree not to sue them later/a legal release, and it helps a company hide layoffs/financial issues before they are found out (not saying it is right, but it is routine now in a lot of companies).

My income sitiwation is not that secure otherwise I would have done that ages ago. The favoritism at work is what drives me up the walls and I won't kiss assets to get the preferential treatment lol so I'm kinda stuck.

Well, I just work in a store at the moment and I like the guys I work with and the boss is awesome and I wouldn't want to just leave straight away and leave him a staff member down.

Plus I would have to win enough to not work again for it to be worth quitting.

I would guess I would work for a month or two more then maybe after a year or so buy some property to fix up and rent out.

I'd have to hit at least 10 Mil on the Lotto to quit my current job. I'd pay off my house, my bills, set up my kids college funds, invest, put some away for savings and become a full time Musican. I'd still be 'working' though, even though it's something I love doing. So I don't see how life isn't WORK, IMO.

Even if I were to win the jackpot of Mega Millions or Powerball or Ohio Classic Lottery, I would not retire. I have a job that helps people and is not dangerous. So why would I quit helping people (help themselves...I say that since I would in no way extend anyone any of my winnings)? So I definitely would not stop working if I only won $1 million, which would be closer to $600k after federal and state taxes.

I would still have to keep working. Since after taxes are taken it it's much less money. It would be wonderful to win that amount of money but unfortunately it wouldn't afford me to stop working. The one good thing it would do is make it easier for the downtime at work when we have no projects until the next one comes along.

$600-700k is enough own a house outright, add to my retirement, take care of kids' college, and go on a pair of reasonable vacations... Pretty much breaking even. Would be great to be there and then use my income for focus on an earlier retirement.

I would give my notice, however, stay working until the end of the year. From that point, I would buy a 10-20 unit multi family building and run that full time. I live in a great area where the cost of living isn't crazy and I don't have a desire to own a mansion.

Nooo I wouldnt quit for 1 million dollars...I'd love to come to work after I won that amount, because I'd just be working for my retirement and savings then...I have at least a good half set aside for the nest egg, pay off the house, buy 2 good running cars, go on a couple good vacations, get new furniture and a couple flat screen tvs, then work out the rest of my 25 yrs and retire happy
