Using this state as an example:

I add across with the shortsum:

If you mix or wheel the pairs:

you add the numbers together to get the root sum: 123 = 1+2+3 = 6 but if the total is 10 or higher you have to add twice like this 936 = 9+3+6 = 18 = 1+8 = 9 so the root sum of 936 is 9
