I would like to cut somebody a check for $5M and have them scream out, I CAN'T TAKE YOUR FIVE MILLION DOLLARS BECAUSE YOU WON IT IN THE LOTTERY . That will really make my day. Unfortunately, nobody in their right mind will ever do that.

If I was lucky enough to win I do not think I would be too concerned about what people thought of me as long as the check did not bounce at the dealership and jewelry store. And any other place for high dollar items I would like to go into with my winnings. I just hate when people look down at you like you are nothing to them. But if I was lucky and had a lot of money I would be the one laughing every time I checked my bank account balance and saw all those zeros.-weshar75

I'd say there's a stigma for having wealth.

I knew a guy who worked on cars back in the 1970s and a guy kept bringing his Cadillac in for a 'noise'. Finally the shop found the source - which was put in at the factory. There was a beer can with some pebbles in it in the firewall and on the can was a note that said, Hope you had fun finding this you rich ba****d .

lol I agree. What stigma for wealth? I don't get these people worrying about not being accepted into the country club and treated right if they win the lottery. If you basically get along with people before and are accepted, it will be the same afterwards (unless you are some of the people profiled on LCML or are the Justin Bieber in your neighborhood). I checked win the lottery although I wanted to check marry into it but that doesn't seem to have put any stigma on Kerry, who did it twice.

I don't think born into it has as much stigma, if any, as the others. How many time have you heard someone described as Heir to the _ _ _ __ _ fortune ?

I still think old money looks at jackpot winners as, Oh, lottery money? They won't have it long which is unfortunately true all too often.

Born into it? There ain't no stigma. That's the default and at the top of the snooty rich scale. They were raised in it, it's in their blood, and they're part of a dynasty. Old money is best.

Marry into it, is OK too, as long as you're not from across the tracks or the chaufeur's daughter or something.

Then as you go down the snooty scale, you have new money rich, the best of which is that which is made on the backs or misfortune of others like bankers, hedge fund, private equity, etc.... [ More ]

Born into it... you come from people who knew how to make money.

Marry into it... at least your partner could make money (or came from parents who knew how to).

Lottery... you lucked into money.

The lottery is the only one I can see that doesn't have some sort of positive surrounding it. Those who were born into it and those who married into it would both likely look down upon you.
