Honestly, most people in general would not hold each other to it if it was just a brief jokingly kind of thing, but if it was a serious pact then that changes everything and i would keep my word if that was the case. But i would never make such a pact to begin with so there would be no confusion or issues to deal with.

I can't imagine making such a statement to anyone even if i had every intention of helping them, but if i did make such a pact i would keep my word. I guess the next question would be, what if something changed for the worse in your relationship with this person from the time you made the pact and finally won? This is just one of many reasons why i would never make such a pack to begin with.

I know what you mean. My 93 year old friend who I drink with regularly has been playing religiously since 1980 and hasn't won yet. But I still ask him what kind of hearing aid he'd buy IF he ever won. Just last week he told me that he's gonna hit the JP any day now. I just shake his hand and nod.

I think Jon read the facts as presented and as I did as well. Whether someone was drunk is not the issue. It was the typical social gathering where alcohol was present, where people gossip, tell colorful stories, and engage in a bit of hyperbole. People say crazy things at social gatherings regardless of the number of times this alleged pact was made. I can't imagine holding anyone to such a promise.

There is nothing in the original question that speaks of either your friends or yourself being drunk nor is there a suggestion that your friends are asking for a share . The onus is on you as the one making the pact ... and get this, not once but over the years . If the topic came up from time to time with you suggesting it- why is the attitude suddenly changed because you won?

Well had l gone that route with the question CT- it might have rendered the question moot. The excuses from the others could range from we were drinking, l had no idea you were kidding and so on so forth, BUT if you initiated the Offer to your buddies, the question remains will YOU honor it?

These are also friends from long ago, does one lawyer up if pressed by said friends? I could be wrong about this but JonD's answer seems to imply that.

If you aren't wasted and you remember making the promise the next day, I am not seeing what the issue is. Making a promise while lucid enough to understand that promise means there's no reason not to honour your word. Making a promise while so drunk you don't know what's going on, that's where the ambiguity may lie.

Friendship is a two way street NG.

Would a true friend take advantage of you and hold you to a promise made while you were drunk? I think not. Would a true friend take advantage of a lady friend when she was drunk? I think not. They would not be a true friend if they tried to screw you in either case.

The law would take a similar view, that an oral contract would be non-binding while one or both parties was under the influence.

Its only a tough question if one has reservations about keeping one's word. I would imagine that if you have drinking buddies for years, and the topic of the lottery has come up from time to time, drinking or not, there had to be some seriousness involved to begin with.

Whewwwwww...Tough question. I think back to my youth and some of the statements I may have made while consuming alcohol ??? Would I have to honor them ??? Well...... I am going with the no option because of the influence of alcohol and NOT making sound ration decisions....But, when I win the big jackpot, then I will help out those I have exchanged promises in the past ....Just never glad I made any promises under the influence like that

Personally, I wouldn't go around making such pacts, especially if the drinking buddy doesn't put out the money for the tickets but if that's what you promised, then you have to stick by it and do what you promised.
