In other words, pari-mutuel is actually a better option for players.

Not surprised. California gets a bad rap sometimes. Not in this case.

I wonder if that benefit applies to all prizes.

Hi rdgrnr,

I have to say that I have read your posts many times, and each time they make my day. You have such a great sense of humor, you should write a book on your view of life and Cicada's. I will never forget the day you were on a motorcycle and you said something to the effect of the wind and the cicada's blowing in your face maybe at 50 miles an hour. That was classic.

Have a great week rdgrnr,

CopyCat

It is the prize value that is awarded to winners of the draw. Same for all the other tiers. My table shows the average of all those values since CA PB launch for all draws with a winner in that tier.

In your example, it would be the pari-mutuel prize value of $750K.(because the prize pool of $1.5M is split by 2 winners

Is that average prize value what is paid out to each winner or the total amount?

For example, the pari-mutuel could be $1.5 M, but if two people win they each get $750K.

In my example does the average prize value mentioned above refer to $1.5M or $750

The OP's chart was just single draw prize values for 2/26 PB draw.

The long term average prize value per draw for CA PB 5/5 is actually a little over a million. See my chart above for long term average since CA PB launch.

But you also have to eat the ups and downs with pari-mutuel. See pictures above for some 5/5 extremes examples.

Most any other state you get 5/5 w/out the PB and it's usually $1 million(haven't researched all participating states) But in California it's ONLY $538,659(according to Bytheshore's chart above) ???..then take out fed taxes of 25%(almost $135K) more will come later ...Leaves roughly $403,000.00

Just for S G..let's change that to $1 million for the 5/5 and no PB like the rest of the country....take out the 25% for feds(250K and more to come later) and then lets add 12.3% for CA. state tax... [ More ]

Yep, the 1+PB prize often gets shafted for CA pari-mutuel Powerball.

It doesn't have to be this way though.(pari-mutuel normally results in slightly higher average prize values) They just need to tweak the prize share percentages a bit.

The old and new MM were/are slightly tweaked away from the straight statistical allocations per prize tier for CA pari-mutuel versions. Not sure why they didn't do this with PB. Will they fix it? Who knows, only if people make a fuss I'd imagine.

As we a... [ More ]

It already happened many times before actually, its almost twice as hard to get 1 w/PB than 0 w/PB, but the prizes are the same. It sucks that many times 3 w/o PB or 2+PB is $6 as well. Only one time I saw 3 w/o PB it go for $8.

Powerball in CA is mainly about getting 4 w/PB, 5 w/o PB, or winning the Jackpot. 4 w/PB is usually over $10k which is the prefixed amount in other states.

Though 5 w/o PB rolls over if there is no winner, it will not be $1Million in a single draw unless the Jackpo... [ More ]
