With a government that loves to redistribute wealth why would these folks ever want to work? As long as they get freebies, living below the poverty level doesn't matter.

Remember gains aren't gains unless you have sold and paid the taxes. Timing the market to get out before the central bank reverses policy is tough. The big players will react quick and punish any unrealized gains. Jill might have some insights on this stuff for you. Your right it was right to be in the market as of late so congrats.

Yea and I watched my 401k EXPLODE from 2008 to now. I had rebalanced in 2006 to put 80% in fixed income so didn't take much of a hit on 2008. I am still working so still putting $$ in. I have done VERY well since 2008, and I am VERY happy I am invested in it. So you SCAREMONGERS can just hide on the sidelines while the rest of us CASH IN

If your 401k is giving you lackluster returns especially with the market gains from last year then you may want to re-balance/re-allocate your portfolio.

A Roth IRA may be a wise option to supplement your retirement as any basis (not gains) can be withdrawn without incurring any penalties or fees.

Playing the lottery can be fun but not if you're relying on it to fund your retirement.

Can you take a loan from your 401k and pay yourself back? With our plans we can, tax free.

You don't have to be a lottery winner to talk to a financial planner.

My Mom used to tell me, have more then one source of income, track your spending and always have 6 months of money in the savings in case something happens.

With time, patience, discipline , willpower, you can build financial security.

I see all the time posters saying to take the lump sum on a jackpot win because they don't trust their politicians not to up the tax rate. Why don't you think that logic doesn't extend to 401K's? The promises have been run up and they need more money through property tax and 401's.

Yes, there are early penalties for withdrawal. But have you looked at the NUMBERS of just putting $10 a month in one, and then if an employer matches? At age 58 you will look back and go 'WHY did I not invest in my 401k
