ALL the lottery games are hard to win. The Texas 2 Step starts at $200,000 with odds of 1 in 1,832,600. I hardly win anything on that.

But, it only takes one ticket, one time.

It's worth a buck.

Who is going to play lottery games, where winning small prizes feel like playing for a jackpot? The odds of winning $5,000 in Mega millions are 1 in 739,688. Does the lottery think that lottery players are stupid? The starting jackpots should be $100 Million for Mega Millions and Powerball compared to the odds of winning.

Mega millions and Powerball are not making the amount of money that they were expecting. These jackpots are taking forever to cross the $100 Million level. Players are not spending big money on Mega Millions odds of 1 in 259 Million and Powerball odds of 1 in 175 Million. The small prizes are too hard too win, and they pay nothing compared to the odds of winning.

Here are the 5+1 hits only list along with population totals from 2007-2014.

There are a few things to note that may change the numbers slightly:

2007-2008 Mega Millions consist of 12 states 2007-2008 Powerball consist of 31 states 2009 Florida enters Powerball 2009 Arkansas enters Powerball 2010 States start playing both Mega Millions Powerball (not California) April 2013 California enters Powerball

You also need to add the number of Matrix changes in those years.

Good stuff! Just based on the population rank and 5+1 winnings, it is obvious that higher population states win more. The correlation has a p-value of 0.000001, which is 50,000 times more significant than the widely-accepted 0.05 level. Nothing better to put to rest erroneous beliefs than hard facts

The odds of matching three MM numbers plus the bonus are almost the same a picking a pick-4 number straight and the payoff is $50 compared to $5000. But it's not a well kept secret because they are betting $1 to win millions in MM compared to only $5000 making the odds irrelevant.

It's nothing new with a lot of LP members, not just with this poster. A recurring theme of ignorance AND denial seems to be rampant.

Another poster who is well known, won't mention the name, has this same problem, but with another subject. The subject of why most of the JP winners are QPs. If I don't have the winning ticket in my hand it doesn't make me feel any better if someone in my state wins. The lottery must remain random or we would all have to stop playing. Play your state lottery the odds of someone winning from your state will be greater.

If you read the rules MUSL only handle the jackpot potion of the games, the rest of the games and prizes are the responsibility of the each state. If your state wants more local winners of the lower tier prizes then perhaps they should run promotions to sell more tickets. Ohio has a buy two get one free for MegaMillions tickets when the jackpot is under $100M on draw nights between 7:30PM and 10:45PM.

That's based on an average of 50,000 tickets sold every drawing and over time the probability is if ND maintains that average, they will average one five number match every year. There were five number matches on 4/2/2011, on 3/13/2013, and another on 9/21/2013. That's three five number matches in three years.

New York averages over 1 million tickets sold for every PB drawing so it's likely that state will produce on average, one five number match every five drawings.

Rhode Island won 2 PB jackpots within a 1 month span back in 2012. One of them was a huge one, about $338 Million if I remember correctly.

We also had a $5 Million winner here in MM earlier this year.

When applying odds against matching 5 numbers to the total sales, the average is 1 PB five number match for every 5,153,633 tickets sold. Each individual PB state is responsible for paying all secondary prize payoffs and state lotteries like in North Dakota only sold 52,040 tickets for the 6/5 drawing. Just based on the odds against winning, ND should expect 1 five number match every year (100 drawings).
