I've never heard of Texas, or any MUSL state really, advancing funds not received for jackpots. Seems like that would open up a liability for them. I did a quick search on Texas' regulations and found this: If necessary, when the due date for the payment of a prize occurs before the receipt of funds in the prize pool trust sufficient to pay the prize, the transfer of funds for the payment of the full lump sum cash amount may be delayed pending receipt of funds from the party lotteries. I've read of supposed winners convincing local merchants that they've won a lottery jackpot and being extended credit for a new car and other stuff, I suppose you could try the same thing with your local bank if you just had to have some of your winnings right away.

Years ago, one of our members here wrote to several state lottery office with a list of questions regarding claiming major jackpots and the procedures. Most answered, some did not. Texas did. They posted the responses from each state lottery office.

It'd take me close to an hr. to get to the Amarillo airport, then an hr. flight to DFW and I bet there'd be a layover in Dallas, or at least I'd have to switch planes. Prob. another hr. to Austin and a half hr. cab ride to lottery headquarters. I'd have that ticket wrapped in so much plastic and taped around my waist the airline scanner would probably think it's a bomb. Mike....our state seems pretty good about the payouts being relatively quick..... I have a little over 300 miles to get to Austin( 4 1/2 - 5 hour drive)....After the day or 2 of being on total nerves, getting to the bank to get a safety deposit box, it would be time to get to work on contacting the attorney and financial team , making appointments to see each of them.... Does that initial $1 million payout from the state also depend on the state? Do all the states do that or just some? Because I remember a destitute person won a MUSL game some years back and he got a financial advisor who got him a small loan so that he could have a place to live and food to eat until he got his winnings. I had thought that I read somewhere that funds were electronic, but about 4 days to clear depending on your bank - for Texas Lottery winnings. Multi state takes a minimum 2 weeks for all the states to send the money to the winning state.

Wasn't there someone here who reported that for the multi state jackpots, your home state would pay an initial $1m or so in anticipation of collecting all the funds from the various states?

Yup. Definitely insane. What could they possibly need to do that would take 2 months to process? Barring an act of God, I can think of no reason why a claim can't be processed within a 3 week timeframe. 4weeks at the absolute max. Anything more than that and the state should have to pay interest. I'm pretty sure they'd find a way to speed up the process if they had to do that.

As the others have said, it depends on the state and amount won. Where I am, up to $1 million, you can have your funds deposited into your account the same day as long as you complete the paperwork before 4pm. otherwise it's deposited the next business day. Large jackpots I think they say takes 14 days, but that timeframe changes with when the claim is made. Tickets worth over $25,000 are usually only validated at lottery headquarters, but in some states tickets of any value can be cashed at lottery headquarters. A MM or PB jackpot winner will probably get more fan fair, but they will take your picture holding a huge check and might put it on their website. In Ohio, it took about six weeks to get the check a few years ago, but it may be quicker now.

Depends on the size of the winnings. It could be as eventful as visiting Waffle House at 3 AM, or as walking the red carpet of a Hollywood premiere.

As others have said, procedures vary by states, and in most cases you just wait in line and they pay you on the spot after verifying your ticket. Larger winnings take anywhere from a few days to couple of weeks to process, especially if it is a national jackpot winning ticket.

That's right, depends upon the state . I just looked through the Texas Lottery website and didn't see anything about the time between claiming a JP and getting your money, just that it could take up to six weeks if claiming by mail for smaller prize amounts. Anything over a million bucks has to be claimed at the Austin headquarters, a distance of nearly 500 miles for me. It depends on the state. Arizona, for example, says it will take up to 15 business days for you to receive your money. And they will not direct deposit. You must take a check.

I have never won unfortunately but I have read you have to go meet the lottery commission at their main office to verify your ticket. You might have to have your media circus conference unless you are lucky enough to claim anonymously, they issue you your huge publicity check . Decide how you want the money, annuity or lump sum, give them your account info then wait about two to three weeks for them to wire the funds to your account.
