This is a stupid indeed. The luck of the draw determines the winner, not where they live. I live in Baltimore, and we have geniuses here who say that the best chance to hit the mega millions or powerball is to play a ticket in the county instead of the city! I keep telling them it doesn't matter where the ticket is played, but they don't want to listen to common sense, oh well.

There haven't been any big winners in a long time.

Since September 1 last year there have been 5 jackpots hit for between 1 and 2 million

1 jackpot hit for about 3 million and

1 jackpot hit for about 5 million.

So if you want to save money don't play until JP is over 3 Million

I can remember a group of people here in Michigan trying to start a boycott of the 6/47 game because they thought 10 million to 1 odd were too hideous. They wrote to newspapers at the time to solicit a boycott. That was in 1989.

Unlike some of the smaller states, larger states like my state (Ohio) have a bunch of local games like pick3, pick4, pick5, Keno, Rolling Cash5 (5/39), Classic Lotto (6/49), Cash Explosion and numerous scratch off game that compete with those games.

I'm not too familiar with the living arrangements in that area, but that still seems weird. Even Wyoming, with just under 600,000 population has more than Virginia and DC in sales combined ($44,845). Also Vermont, with just over 600,000 population has triple the sales of Virginia ($17,830). Plus Maryland appears to have a similar situation in regards to closeness to DC and had $480,000 in sales last draw. You're probably correct, it would just be interesting to see roughly how many lines are duplicates (or maybe even just sales numbers without including megaplier sales). Like the last two big winners that had two winners. One had $336,545,306 in sales and the other had $113,435,277. Almost triple the sales but the same results.

It seems Virgina doesn't play much. Population of 8 million yet only $5,300 in sales compared to Idaho with 2 million population and $68,000 spent. And of course New York and California combined blow every other state out of the water (the two together spent as much as the next 5 states combined on the last jackpot winning draw).

On a side note, it would be interesting if MegaMillions (and Powerball for that matter) released stats of how many combinations each state played. Especially in those cases where we have big jackpots with multiple winners like when Kansas, Illinois and Maryland all won.

The odds a state has of winning means nothing, though. It's a very vague indicator of what state spends more on that game. And I say vague, because even though some states spend more, that's not all it takes to win. Because the lottery draws balls at random and it only takes a dollar to win, more money doesn't always mean more wins, which would give a pretty large +/- on whatever odds a state was given.

I live in Florida. My city has a population of about 66,000.

Jacksonville City FL, has a population of 836,000.

So I'd be an idiot to complain about how unfair it is that Jacksonville City is winning more Florida Lotto JPs than the town I live in. It's just not fair... whaa whaaa whaaa!!!

Obviously you're getting people odds, and state odds mixed up. Maybe they should do the odds of winning for each state, that would be the better way to do it. Say a state has a 1 out of certain number of odds to win MM or PB. It's not ignorance per se, or misunderstandings.

Each person has the same percentage/odds of winning. The only thing that changes those odds/percentages is amount played, which the player decides on.

Each state has different odds/percentages of winning because each state has vastly varying amounts of players and money spent on the lottery.

By saying that CA has an unfair advantage, then you must be saying that to make it fair for the other states, CA must limit how many tickets they sell each draw.

But then, it would be unfair to those that wanted to play but can't because tickets sales would be cut off. What's the sense in that?

I was just thinking about that last night. I think they went the wrong route in trying to increase the JP. They should have decreased the white balls to get a few more million dollar winners to encourage hope and keep people playing. And they should have increased the number of megaballs to make it harder to win the jackpot.

I've fought with that thought for a ling while. Ever since they changed the Matrix to that ridiculous 5/75 it's almost impossible to hit the 2nd prize which is what I judge most lottery games on. Why don't you quit whining and move to California- if you won't or cannot, move to Florida or New Jersey seeing that they have seen more than a few jackpot winners as of late, the problem is not the population, it's picking the winning numbers.Colorado had its first winner a week or so ago- should the State have folded its tent awhile ago seeing that they had not produced a winner

Boycotting is just as useless as petitions. I'm sick of all the conspiracy theories with lotteries. If you're feeling that one state is winning more than others, either move to that state or STOP PLAYING. It's as simple as that.
