North Carolina has a population of approximately 10 million people, making it the 9th largest state in the country. Bigger than Michigan or New Jersey.

Throw in the roughly 5 million people in South Carolina, and you're looking at a combined population of about 15 million, which is greater than all but 4 states in the entire country. California, Texas, Florida and New York.

To me, it cant be more obvious. The opportunity to sell the most tickets exists in California simply because California is the most populated state in America.

Lottoluck777, Ca. buys more tickets, so they have more winners. I do believe that but, I also think that it should not matter with a national game. I don't have any charts in front of me right now, but If you add up the total number of sales of other states that would add up to be more tickets sold than Ca.. So with that in mind, it should not matter how many tickets sold in Ca., Florida or New York. So, as it stands today it matters how many tickets sold in separate states and how many more win... Texas is a big state and should have just as many winners as the other top three bigs, but i doesn't because its sales track record is dismal.

If you do a statistical analysis of the proportion of winners to payers in each state you will find that each state has roughly the same percentage of winners give or take a couple if percent points. Which state gets the big winners, is chosen by who has the winning numbers on their ticket. The balls are not connected to a computer.

I think I can help ya with the belief that certain states always win...... Why don't you contact a friend or relative or other LP player in one of those states that always seem to win more than others, have them buy you a ticket for that draw or better yet buy you an advanced draw ticket for 5 or 10 future draws, that way you will be assured of having a chance. That should defeat the certain states win and further prove the theory.

While I agree that DC is primarily a Pick 3 and 4 town, one could argue that it's a Pick 3 and 4 world!

That's just a function of the easier odds. I've talked with many diehard lottery players in NYC. They want/like to see a few bucks come back to them. Pick 3 makes that happen for them, so they play it every day.

If it was strictly about how many previous winners there were, sure. Winning is determined by the numbers on the ticket and not where it's bought.

i am just saying i feel a lot better getting my tickets from VA and MD after i reviewed the stats. DC only seems to have a jp winner once every ten years and a 2nd tier winner once or twice every 3 yrs. Would you feel comfortable buying jp ticks there? DC from my observation is really a pick 3 and 4 town. It is their bread and butter games. From talking to a lot of folks here they dislike the jp games.. in my experience

What function do they execute to generate more winners in their state? There is really no logical explanation or sense to this. That explains why Texas pulled out of the MMC early and suprised everyone. If sales are dismal for the other draw games then mmc was gonna fail too. If they knew that the scratch offs are more Texas' kind of thing they shouldn't have added another draw game to their stable.

Texas does not have that many winners despite the population. PB sales are dismal in Tx, but also in all other states.

My theory, (and that's all it is) is that in Tx most play scratchoffs. They are insanely popular. I play one once in a while, but I always liked the idea that I could drop a buck on MM or PB ($2), or Lotto and win millions. I know the odds, but.....

There was another stat in another thread somewhere in the discussion forum touting the same idea of facts about how much the states contribute to MUSL explaining why the states have the winners they have. DC only contirbuted 8 mil to MUSL last fiscal year and they have not had a powerball or MM jp winner since 2009.Which is why i only buy tickets in MD or VA becuz they have fared better. In the month of January, there have been 42 Powerball second prize winners in 8 draws. I didn't take the time to add all the states. But to me that is 42 people that won at least 1 million dollars.

I do agree that I hate to see the matrix change. Personally, This Saturday will be the second time i have bought a PB tic this year. Once the changes takes place, PB is pretty much off my radar unless it climbs as high or higher than it is now.

I'm trying my best to pull away from pb and mm. Because I to feel that everybody does not have the same chances of winning and that's my opinion. someone said one time that you have to be in the right place at the right time as far as buying your lottery ticket. I guess I look at all the tickets that have been bought across the United States and still some of the same places still are lucky enough to get the winning tickets or second tier.

The overall odds of winning PB are 1 in 31.85, so simple probability suggests that a winner would be produced for every 31.85 tickets sold. I understand that California is more populated, has more players, and therefore has more winners. It's just that some states haven't had a jackpot winner in YEARS. I was happy to see that NC had a million dollar winner last night. I just wish there were more second tier winners. Spread the wealth around, that's all!

Not looking forward to PB changing the matrix. There will be even less winners then.
