The rest of the population cannot verify that this person did indeed win.

If they announce John Smith won the lottery you would not be able to verify it is not in fact Jack smith.

Unless they worked at the IRS and looked into it (which they are probably not allowed to)

I'm from the same state as the winner, and the NC lottery holds press conferences for winners, which are televised on some local affiliates. To promote the lottery, many radio stations, newspapers, websites etcetera around the state report wins like this lady's - giving out personal information.

If you were sharper, you'd know that lotteries want lots of publicity, which is the main reason they have transparency policies that give them the right to publish your photo, name, location etcetera.... [ More ]

You apparently aren't sharp enough to have noticed that the video only shows a still picture of her holding the check, and offers absolutely zero indication that the lottery did anything more to publicize her win than to post that still photo on their website. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong.

When the NY lawyer tried to claim that jackpot winning Hot Lotto ticket on behalf of a trust, the Iowa Lottery wanted the name of the person purchasing the ticket before they write the check. We now know why that trust was formed, but the rule to know who purchased the ticket is probably for some the reasons you listed. Somebody in KY matched 5 + 0 in PB and the lottery said they would give the store location after verifying where the ticket was

I am under the impression at least here in Indiana you can claim in a trust and the trustee can appear at the press conference to collect the big check. However, the lottery still has to know your identity and will process the claim in the normal channels. So I don't think you can hid your child support or judgements, etc. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong.

The entity MANAGING a trust is public information, but the identity of the individual the trust was established for is NOT. That information can usually only be obtained via court order. If the entity managing the trust leaked a client's name to an unauthorized person or source, they could be sued big time.

With my face being allover the news recently, I prefer no picture if I were to be blessed as a winner. Name not associated with face at that time. Was involved in a community action that was given publicity. Work in a position that puts me in the public eye. Would prefer anonymity of course but my state won't allow it, even if you win in another state. They made SC reveal the winner when a NC player won in SC.

I try my best to research both sides of an argument before making up my mind. I have no use for people who debate on emotion alone or use a very few high-profile examples as proof they're right, especially when the statistics show otherwise. I was just trying to point out you stand a much better chance of getting killed driving to get your lottery ticket than you do being killed for winning.

Well, I still would prefer a choice- period.

I am less concerned about lottery officials cashing in on old school ball drops with astronomical odds than I am with walking around town with giant $ sign on my back. Yeah, you could easily lay low for awhile, but I don't want be a recluse either.

It's the winner's life that is at stake. Statistics show you're being overly dramatic. If you'll give me a verfiable number of total lottery winners over the last 20 yrs. along with the number of people known to have been murdered for their winnings in that same time period, then I'll give your statement some validity. I am not disagreeing with that stuff. Are you saying they would keep the money after confirming the ticket, or before anyone comes to claim it? You also have to work about if they pull that cyprus thing here. What you say is plausible considering the rampant corruption in others areas of government.

Exactly. Winners shouldn't have to worry about that. If they bring it on themselves getting into trouble, and hanging out with the wrong crowd...Then that isn't the lotteries fault.

Right. Because with a government that snoops through our emails, keeps records of every phone call we make, and just takes the money if you have a few grand in cash when they catch you speeding it's wildly unthinkable that they might just say there's a winner and keep the money.

It's a program run by the government and using public funds (save the argument - once you buy a ticket it's the government's money), so I don't see a valid reason for completely withholding a winner's identity, but I never said there's a problem with a 30 or 60 day period before releasing a winner's information.

In my state we cannot be anonymous. If I ever won a jackpot I plan to go to the news conference with a paper bag over my head and would also use a paper bag when Lottery Headquarters takes my picture. I am someone who rarely lets anyone take my picture so thank goodness there are not many photos of me around and I have no Facebook. LOL right officials telling their friends about winning the lottery they arent even supposed to be playing, but yes that is one reason why it should not be any anonymity. The majority of people who want to hurt you or will hurt you in these kinds of situations would be someone you know anyways. So anonymous or not you still could be hurt be someone who knew about your situation anyways.

Its not about marketing or advertising, I as a player want to know that a real living person has won not some faceless unknown whatever. How would we know it wasnt lottery officials winning over and over it anonymity was allowed to be used. No I want to see the name and the face of the person upfront which also reinforces the hope that it one day it could be me, and that is why we all play, because of that hope

In a perfect world, yes everyone who plays the lottery would have those options. And true, most people who win the lottery are going to be safe and many are capable of getting an attorney or loan to either move to an anonymous location or claiming via a trust or LLC, but that doesn't mean the lottery couldn't use a slight change in how they announce winners.

Could not have said it better myself. What I find interesting is that no one is screaming foul play over those who have claimed anonymously.

Just recently we had a $400 million winner from SC. He claimed his money and went on his merry way, and guess what? The lottery didn't come to a screeching halt. No one on these boards gave a d@mn. They all continued to actively play.

However, you have been given many examples of why being able to be anonymous to collect a large lottery win have been given.
