Alabama did put a state lottery on the ballot a couple of years ago, but the people voted against it. TN, GA, and FL benefit from that as my state, LA, benefits from MS not having a lottery.

I don't know but the last time I checked if you are a resident of Hawaii and you do gamble anywhere you are not allowed to deduct gambling losses on your Hawaii taxes but you have to declare all wins.

A simplified example -

Just as an example if you are from Hawaii and you buy a $500 pack of scratchers in some other state and you get back $135 you have to declare that $135 as income and cant deduct the $365 losses.

So you lose $365 but have to declare $135 in income.

Usually money talks and BS walks.

But.....in Texas, we still have idiots in Austin trying to kill the lottery, despite the fact they would lose a billion dollars a year in revenue. And they blindly refuse to allow casinos while watching people go to LA and OK casinos.

If the lottery ever gets killed off, I'll be driving up to OK every 4 or 5 weeks to play MM, PB, and Hot Lotto.

Before Oklahoma had the lottery, players had to to go Texas Kansas. One of the reason it took Oklahoma so long was the casinos owners. They ended up passing the bill but with ridiculous legislation that's why Oklahoma scratchers can't exceed $5 for $40,000.00 and we can't have a state lotto jackpot game.

Freedom of choice myturn . Just because one state chooses something, it doesn't mean all states choose that. Lotteries are not a national law governed by the Constitution, it's a states choice. Similar to invoking a state income tax. Some states do and some don't, to generate revenue. They could have religious reasoning behind their choice or other ideas as why it's not currently available. Louisiana benefits from Mississippi not having a lottery, since people from that state cross the border to play. There are several winners from Mississippi listed on the Louisiana Lottery website.

Mississippi, like Nevada, also has casinos, so if they have a say, there probably won't be a lottery there soon either.

Six states, Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada and Utah,are losing millions in state revenue as they don't have state-run lotteries. Millions of dollars are crossing state lines to states with lotteries.

US lottery revenue in 2014 was $70bn. Powerball alone accounted for $4.81bn. For comparison's sake, the combined 2014 gross revenue for professional football, baseball and basketball was only $23.6bn.
