Newsflash!!! If you win any big prize on ANY state lottery game they are legally required by the feds to withhold 25% before they pay any prize to a winner. It amazes me that so many people lack the logic and reasoning capacities to see the advertising shell game that is going on there.

Newsflash #2 The player IS responsible for that 25% as it comes out of the total jackpot winnings and the jackpot cash value is advertised as the cash amount less what they are required to withhold on that

I don't think anyone cares if it was a gimmick or not. Bottom line is that the winner of the advertised jackpot got the entire amount and was not responsible for any of the initial withholding granted they are still responsible for the balance of the federal taxes.

You can stand behind the marketing gimmick all you want but it's not relevant to anybody that plays that game.

The couple struck it rich Saturday night when their Hot Lotto numbers were drawn. As a bonus, the lottery picks up the taxes on this game's big payout.

Of course everything is marketing, the same as advertising a total jackpot value is not net to the person winning but heaven forbid I should make such an asinine statement to a mastermind such as yourself.

Drenick1 when I explain this to you, you are going to wonder how you could have been so dumb!

It is a marketing gimmick!

The lottery is not picking up any of the taxes they are just advertising the amount AFTER the IRS required amount is withheld!

They can bloat the jackpot by advertising an annuity amount. They can advertise the pre-tax cash value or they can advertise the amount after the required IRS withholding.

I have to agree with the Eagle Nest home ... they won more money so they can afford maintenance and taxes ... they were older so why not enjoy life. I'd like the movie theater and the gym ... with all the peace and serenity they now have, they may well live longer lives.

Watch how they eat, use the gym daily and go for it ... they really never need to go on vacation anywhere ... they are on vacation every day. People work all year to get a week or two for a getaway vacation to the mountains o... [ More ]

Very interesting shows. That Eagle Nest home was absolutely gorgeous. I didnt think they were going to choose it, altho it would have been my pick lol. All three of the houses were very nice.

I did check and they are trying to cast more people to come on the show. So maybe this will continue? They usually rerun many times so I expect in time these too will be run again.

The minnesota couple picked an equally nice home. Something to be said about any multi-million dollar home lol.

That's the strange thing ... at least for now, the episodes are not listed to be shown again any time soon and there are no new episodes scheduled to be broadcast also any time soon. So either they are still working on future episodes or they may rush more episodes to be broadcast sooner.

Perhaps they were caught off guard with the popularity of the show ... but many of their shows are popular. I often check to see what the country is watching and many times HGTV has a show in the top five. P... [ More ]

I was just watching one of the newest american greed and they had an episode called the Playboy of Indiana , turns out he was a fraudster. The things he bought was with money he stole from investors ,lot of the luxury cars were leased and the huga mansion had a huge mortgage and was poorly build. Those tax rates are so sweet!` In the Sunshine State, they would have paid 5 times as much in property taxes but no income tax on their lottery winnings. I guess no state offers every advantage.

California also has a top tier 13.3% state income tax rate but the lottery win was exempt. Any future earnings will be subject to the state tax as well as the 3.8% Obamacare tax.

The property tax on the Eagle Crest home was 23k in 2014. That home is over 16,000 sq.ft and sits on 50 acres and they bought it for $5.5 million. The 155 acre bison ranch below them was purchased for $1.59 million one week after they closed on the Eagle Crest property.

Property tax on the bison ranch was $300 for 2014. They also purchased 600 acres behind them but I couldn't find any data on that.

Darn, I missed it. So I probably shouldn't pre-judge, but...come on. How are you going to spend 25% of your winnings on one home? Unless they were in their 70s and had absolutely no debt when they won, this was probably not a good idea.

It used to be if I ever won I wanted to finance a few projects that nobody else is working on but under the current regulatory and tax environment I no longer feel like doing that.

I watched this show and the houses are nice but I wouldn't want to have them.

Maybe there will be an episode where someone buys a big island and puts a modest house on it. That would be interesting. (Or maybe buy an already built home on an island

I just read that the Hot lotto winner has their initial withholding (25% federal and 7.25% state) paid for by the lottery. They are only responsible for the balance of the federal tax which is 14.6% which is $1.7 million so the MN winners ended up netting $10 million.

I think that is kind of crazy because the $11.7 million is before any taxes are taken out, the true net amount is about $6.3 million after all Federal and state taxes are deducted. I just found out that the hot lotto jackpot prize is paid out as a lump sum value of the advertised amount.

At least the other couple had a much larger jackpot win with a pre-tax lump cash value of $107 million which should have netted them roughly $65 million after all federal tax obligations are met.

I loved the house (Eagle crest) that they chose! already having 50 acres and then to purchase the adjacent properties to now have over 800 acres is mind boggling. With numerous adult children as well as grand children, I have no doubt the entire family will enjoy their new compound.

Both shows sound good I am looking foward to them. I am from Southern California and altho Riverside is not my favorite place I agree with a lot with acreage. The subdivisions being built nowadays are so close you can almost reach out and touch your neighbors roof overhang. I too, would look for large open, private, secured land if I won.

The MN show will be interesting, how about making a barn a home, that wouldbe different. Training German Shepherds, that is what is so great about showcasin... [ More ]

Thank you for letting us know. I try to keep track of TLC's repeat Lottery shows but it is nice to hear of some new shows and surprising it is coming from HGTV.

HGTV used to be my favorite but once they got rid of any host over the age of 30 it was just plain boring. It is all about real estate and buying and selling. All the good hosts/shows are gone, Candace Olson, Ahmed Assad, Paul James, Joe Washington.

Maybe these Lottery Dream Home shows can redeem the channel.
