I missed winning $40,000 on Powerball with Powerplay by one number once, so I won $400 instead. Still not a bad haul.

For me it was 5 of 6 in the California lottery in 1987. Paid $2002, the jackpot was somewhere around $23M if I remember right. Played it in a little railroad stop called Nipton that was very popular with people from Nevada - until Primm opened.

The highest ever win was $35 on MM and PB (3 different times)... in July, I matched 3 and the other numbers I was off by just one digit.

A couple of friends did. One came close to winning $49 million in Lotto max (Canadian). Only the last number was one number off. She got around $10 k or something. For the other friend, his numbers came close to matching all the numbers for mega millions, but each set of the numbers for one off from the right ones. He almost flipped his lid.

I matched 4 numbers three times in one week playing Rolling Cash 5, 4 numbers in both MM and PB, and 5 numbers twice in Ohio Lotto games. The first time I matched 5 out of 6 in the Ohio Lotto, it seemed like I was really close to winning the jackpot until I did the math. There are 258 combinations in 6/49 games matching 5 numbers every drawing, 170 four number matches in 5/39 games, and 350 for MM.

Since I know it's not exactly a close call , no stories.

I matched 5 of 6 with Ohio's Classic Lotto(6/49) in February of 2013 when its jackpot was over $11M and I also had posted the ten combinations I played on the prediction board. Anyone who saw my predictions and my win probably figured I got lucky and after trying to repeat ever since I would have to agree with them. I did the same thing several years earlier with Ohio's Super Lotto(6/49+1). Although I've hit MM and PB more often I've only hit 0+1, 1+1's and 2+1's for $1-$7.... [ More ]

I'm interested in any stories you have heard; but really what I am asking is have you or anyone immediately close to you had close calls to 1,000,000 or larger wins at lotteries.

Its so rare I would find it interesting to know how many regular players brush up against that big pay off.
