Fact of the matter is : Some people hate taking advice. They love to be exposed to the news and often seek out publicity. There are those winners who want to be left alone while others crave the limelight, often giving out so called advice - Richard lustig come to mind. Saying No Thanks is not being mean- it means just that Leave me alone with my Money my thoughts. Everyone is entitled to privacy- that's why its called PRIVATE : preferring to keep personal affairs to oneself.

Trust No One..... [ More ]

I am relieved to be going slowly in the beginning.

Susan Bradley , a CFP and author , suggests a DFZ which is a Decision Free Zone.

You all make very good points. Every merchant wants to sell to you, your friends and your family. They want you to be safe and bring back more people to purchase their products. The lottery guys are the only merchants I know of that don't care if you are alive or not so far as they get their cheap publicity. For crying out loud, even the dopeman wants you to stay alive so you can buy more dope. It is really a big shame when you get rated lower than the dopeman.

Agreed. I categorize that under emotional well-being. Cynthia Stafford's sister made a website, badmouthing Cynthia for not giving her a penny. I imagine if Cynthia had won the amount Jack Whitaker or Gloria won, it would have gotten more traction in the media. Bud Post would have been murdered had the hitman his own brother hired not gotten cold feet and went to the cops. Family can be just as ruthless and relentless as strangers. Maybe even more so because they will feel more entitled to a sha... [ More ]

I agree, it is not a leading reason, but a reason nonetheless. My main reason for wishing the to remain anonymous would be family pressure. I can imagine people who win, come under enormous pressure to help , which means hand over cash.

While I might find that faintly annoying, I don't think many people would choose that as a leading reason to demand anonymity. In the U.S. one can register their phone and address to prevent telemarketing calls and junk mail delivery. A few might get through, but between caller ID and a trash can, it's not much of a bother.

The bigger issue, and the one the lottery commission doesn't care about, is the physical safety and emotional wellbeing of the winners.
