I use pairs. rather than digits first. I do Look at single digits though when I am looking for straight potentials.

I DID A BACK TEST OF THE PICK 3 171 DRAWS 75% OF THE TIME AT LEAST 1 NUMBER SHOWED FROM THE PREVIOUS DRAW SAY YOUR PLAYING 314 AND 3 1 0R 4 SHOWS THE LAST DRAW YOUR ODDS INCREASE FOR THE NEXT DRAW EITHER IT B A 1 3 0R 4 U DECIDE OR PLAY NUMBERS WITH A 1 3 4 IN THE MIX WITH OTHERS U PICK OR LIKE

Its really not a lot of numbers if you don't look at the duplicates. I use the duplicates for the straights when I am compiling. I broke down the possibles for the doubles........so unless you are looking for a double....put that list to the side.
