You make some interesting points ... I was hoping for ticket sales to stay around the 300,000 mark ... the Lottery makes a small profit and the players have better odds to win something. However, it looks like ticket sales could blow past that number.

Only ~6 days remaining, and still no ticket countdown on the website (they say it's shown in the app, but not seeing on Android). I understand why PA Lottery is downplaying the countdown due to lousy sales. However, at this point, a widely publicized countdown can't hurt, and would likely will help drive some sales.

I was clicking around the PA Lottery website trying to figure out where the Raffle countdown is located. They say it's in their app. But no dice, at least on Android. Anyways, while browsing, I saw mention of #millionaireraffle, so I searched that on Twitter, and saw some insightful comments.

I'm an out of state buyer, just bought my tickets on Wednesday.

Had it not been for an LP member mentioning in a post in the Pick5 forum that the schedule had been changed to 4 raffles per year, I would have been expecting to buy tickets in Nov/Dec for the New Years raffle. I'm sure I'm not alone. My guess is that there are players in every state that borders PA that don't know about the Halloween Raffle. Very plausible that this could be a big reason why ticket sales just haven't materializ... [ More ]

I still like my guess of 325k, that averages to around 14k per day. I think the sales will be down and not have the large usual uptick in sales because of the out of state people are not looking to pick up their tickets because if the lottery didn't change their drawing dates, the out of state people would be looking to buy in November for what would have been the New years week drawing. Bought one yesterday mid-morning and it was mid 202s. Ramping up a little, but at this rate, a sell out is not happening.

Ending Oct-23: 9K... 220,000 (maybe a little high, but easier to start on a simple round number)

Ending Oct-24: 10K ... 230,000

Ending Oct-25: 10K ... 240,000

Ending Oct-26: 12K ... 252,000 (new holiday tickets should be widely available early this upcoming week)

Well, here's hoping that just 300,00 raffle tickets are sold for this current raffle. That'd make the overall odds 1 in 75,000 which is the best odds I've ever seen to win one million dollars. Overall payback is the percentage of the sales proceeds paid out in prizes. Alone, it can be deceiving depending on the payout table (ie. lots of large prizes with little in between), but should always be kept in mind when choosing games to play and sizes of wagers.

Example, PA Pick 3 odds is 1 in 1000 and pays 500 to 1. On average, for every $1000 taken in, $500 is paid out. $500/$1000 = 50% overall payout.

Most lottery numbers games, including Mega Millions and Powerball, are around 50

My guess is that there will be a surge in ticket sales during the last week they're on sale. I mean it always happens.... never seen a raffle drawing without a surge.

IMHO, there's multiple reasons why there's a surge. I've seen a late surge in sales of Connecticut's SuperDraw raffle, and because the phenomenon isn't unique to PA, I'm leaning toward there being a surge for this current raffle.

Sales are worse than I would have guessed. Maybe the large surge near the end won't happen. But assuming there is a typical surge in the last 5 or so days, 350,000 is possible. I'd be surprised if sales hit high 300s, let alone break into the 400s. Not seeing that happening.

End of October seems a lousy time to end the raffle. However, if winter holiday instant tickets are released in late October, that could boost raffle sales somewhat. I don't foresee the PA Lottery delaying the raffle draw... [ More ]

OK ... I am going to make a prediction of the final number of tickets sold in the PA Raffle. Of course this means nothing but just for fun I am going to use the figures I currently have ... I am figuring around 260,000 total tickets sold when the raffle ends.

I bought a ticket today 25.5 hours from my last ticket purchase yesterday ... exactly 6001 tickets were sold during that time ... current number just under 154,000.

Ron ... you have some great ideas, yes I would also buy a $50 or $100 raffle ticket with very good odds or lower number of tickets ... of course I would only be buying one ticket. I also like the idea of a raffle game every month ... maybe 100,000 total tickets sold as you mentioned.

At the current rate, taking into account the increase in sales near the end, 350,000 appears realistic. Even 400,000 is possible, though, at this point, seems a stretch.

If only 400,000 sell, the odds improve to the following (overall payback % improves to ~64% verses ~51%):

Top Prize 4 $1,000,000 1 in 100,000 (from 125,000)

Second Prize 4 $100,000 1 in 100,000 (from 125,000)

Third Prize 100 $1,000 1 in 4,000 (from 5,000)

Fourth Prize 5,892 $100 1 in 67.89 (from 84.86)

CW - Agreed Mass Cash is the best Pick5 game in The Northeastern United States. One thing about it though for people reading this that may be interested in traveling to Massachusetts (as I did from NY) to buy Mass Cash tickets, the game IS NOT pari-mutuel.

And that's a GOOD thing when you have 5 numbers! But it also means that the lower tier prizes are modest at best. Having 4 numbers will get you $250. 3 numbers is good for $10. G5

They still make a small or good profit and players have one game with good odds going off four times a year ... but there still could be a mad rush for tickets in the last two weeks.

Thanks for posting this information. I'm an out of state player (I live in New York State) and probably wont be buying until late in the week of Oct 18th or possibly even the week of Oct 25th. Because I can only make one trip to PA, I'm stuck with buying all my tickets in one shot. It's a one hour drive over to PA from where I live, and as much as I'd like to make more than one trip, it's very unlikely that's going to happen. G5

I read over the Pa bulletin describing the raffle and is says this:

Just to add to my last post about the best ever odds for a PA lottery game. That was probably last December when the MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES' CLUB game ended.

The PA Lottery said they were going to distribute all the money leftover from the game ending ... most people, including myself, had no idea how much money that would actually be. I only bought one ticket but after seeing the payout results ... I wish I had bought at least 20 tickets ($100).

Yes, that number seems about right ... between 6,000 to 7,000 tickets a day. I'm still looking for a pickup in ticket sales starting next week ... but that may not happen this time.

I bought a ticket late this morning and it was under 110,000 and it was over when you bought one. I bought a ticket on Sep 30th ... so in 6 days they have sold just over 27,000 tickets.

That's not bad for 6 days ... if that continues every 6 days and sales also pick up in the last 3 weeks ... they might get to 300,000 tickets sold, at least to have money for all the prizes with a small profit.

There may be many people waiting for the last two weeks and also from out of state.

Yes, it's not looking good at this point ... however, I'm expecting a surge in the last two weeks. That's when I will be buying the bulk of my tickets. I bought a few tickets in Sep just to have some lower numbers but the last 2 or 3 weeks in Oct could see sales start to pick up.

Still going for that magic number of 300,000 tickets sold to cover the prize totals. This might be the raffle where having 5 or 10 tickets could pay off with several winning tickets for some people.

Coworker said he wouldn't buy any tickets until the last month of sales, hoping to get a number later in the sequence. Little did he know the sales are so poor, his ticket was in the 88K range with 30 days to go. That is less that 18% of total sales since the on sale date of August 25. I bought a ticket yesterday ... Thursday ... it was just under 65,000. I heard from another member later in the day who had just bought a ticket and it was over 65,000.

Sales are clipping along ... I hope they can sell 100,000 tickets by Oct 1st and 200,000 (or more) in October. Until very recently, I was thinking I'd buy eight or nine raffle tickets next week, but I've re-thought that, and I've decided that I'll probably wait until next month to buy them. All true about too many lottery games ... I think the decision to add a two number game was crazy. Why waste precious dollars on that dopey game for such a small return?

Yes, the Cash 5 had odds of 1:575,757 with 39 numbers and now it is 1:962,598 with 43 numbers. I hardly play unless the jackpot is $600,000 or higher and I might not even play that anymore.

The odds are good. Cash 5 here in PA used to have those odds until some knucklehead

thought it would be better to add more numbers hence increasing the odds by millions.

The raffle isn't as exciting as it once was for me, it's hum-drum now and with the offering

at 4 times per year, it's just another game they're hoping to profit from by holding it more

often.

PA already has too much going. The average person can't or just plain doesn't want

Well ... I for one would hate to see the raffle end ... if they sell at least 300,000 tickets, then all the prizes are covered and they make a small profit of over $800,000. There is no other game with odds of 125,000 to one for winning $1 million dollars.

Spending $20 on a raffle ticket seems like a better deal than spending $20 on a scratch off ticket.

My thinking with regard to using a RNG for a raffle as opposed to a drawing of numbered balls from a fixed matrix (6/49) is the lottery really cant use a rotating glass drum with balls in it for a raffle due to time constraints. I suppose a drum could be used, but how practical is it to do that? I would think that it might take a very long time for a rotating drum to spit out 6,000 different winning raffle ticket numbers. I agree the RNG should have just the numbers on it of the exact amount of tickets sold. If it's not a sell out, then somebody/something (a person or a software program) has to manually tell the RNG exactly how many tickets were sold. Cant escape that.

I'm just wondering if I should attempt to tie the timeframe most tickets are sold to the higher numbered top prize winning tickets. I guess I'm asking does that make sense or not? G5

It's possible the numbers skewing high in some raffles is due to a glitch of some sort, or maybe it's simply random variation. There's no simple way to really know, and that's the crux of the issue. Other states using RNDs have experienced glitches due to software bugs / misconfiguration.

The RND and related hardware are closed sourced, and not publicly scrutinized nor even visible. Who knows what the RND is really doing; can't see in there unlike balls that are visible and can be closely exa... [ More ]

GiveFive could be thinking correctly if there is something else going on inside the RNG Raffle machine ... could the machine be open to any sort of hacking with someone secretly tampering with the number selection ... having some of their numbers being drawn ... unknown to the PA Lottery?

There seems to be a pattern of higher winning numbers ... is the software faulty?

Is it just another Mystery of the Ocean ?

Not to argue ... but if the RNG is truly just that ... a machine with a certain amount of raffle numbers inside it or on a computer chip , starting with the very first number (00000001) to the very last number ... whatever that might be at the raffle ending ... if it's not a ticket sell out.

Actually, I think I do know why players wait until the last minute to buy their raffle tickets.

I'm a day of the drawing buyer for the weekly online drawing games that I play, and I'm willing to bet the vast majority of players everywhere are the same way.

If you were to analyze the number of tickets sold for any given Tuesday MegaMillions drawing, my guess is that'd you'd see that the most tickets sold for that drawing were sold on the day of the drawing. (Tuesday!) Yes, some tickets will... [ More ]

In previous posts in this thread, it was shown that a significant portion of tickets are sold just prior to the drawings, and it was also mentioned that it appeared as if tickets with higher numbers had won a majority of the top prizes in multiple drawings. So I'm wondering if a correlation between the two can be made.

Not the easiest page to find, but the info is there. Note the winner names for more recent raffles are truncated (only first name, last name initial, and county / state shown) due to recent change in state law allowing winners more privacy.

Saw that too, and my first thought was there won't be a live televised drawing? Not a biggie, since PA Lottery use a RND (so there's nothing to see anyways), and many players check their tickets the following day. In the past, part of the marketing hype was the live drawing. So far, not seeing much marketing beyond the usual of how great the odds are of winning $1 million and tickets are selling fast (really, they are? -they didn't sell out last time).

I mentioned a lot of winning tickets after 250,000 but perhaps the 200,000 mark would be better. Of course there are winning tickets below 200,000 ... it seems to be more winners after 200,000 or 250,000.

Hard to understand why that would be ... a raffle game is different from a regular game where several people can play the same numbers. A raffle with each number only printing once unless there is some funny stuff going with the computer program picking the winning numbers and with information where the purchase location was.

That would ruin the raffle over time and people would lose interest ... thinking something funny is going on.

Appreciate your honesty CW. Reason i asked is because i played the VA year end raffle last year and they do post the winners and their location. Seems like the big winners came from way south in the state and Va Beach. And the rural areas. Northern Va didn't have that many winners.

Taurus$ ... to be honest, I really don't know where all the large winners trend from. I have rarely seen anything in the paper or online about winners and I don't hunt around at the PA Lottery site for that information.

Since it's a raffle I would think anybody anywhere with a ticket should have an equal shot. The only trend that some players have noticed, including myself, is that many of the large winning tickets at times were higher numbers near the end of the game ... but that's not 100%.... [ More ]

Discovery - New PA Raffle Game Change

I just noticed a small change to the new PA Raffle game that just started Aug 25th and ends on Oct 31st.

The cut off time to buy tickets used to be 5 pm on the day of the drawing ... just noticed it is now 8 pm. The top eight prizes were drawn on live TV at 7 pm ... so that has changed, tickets will still be on sale till 8 pm.

I've never check my numbers anyway till the next day but that's an interesting change ... good for some last minute ticket sales I guess.
