This only kicks in if there is an excessive number of match 5 winners --as might be the case with a huge jackpot. Most players probably don't even realize this could happen under certain conditions. I agree that to do that all the time would be a huge disincentive.

If the lower tiered prized go pari mutuel, that would be a huge disencentive to play. Most people play these games with the hope of scoring a jackpot but really play them because the 2nd and 3rd tier prizes are worth winning. That would not be the case if those went pari mutuel. Jmo.

It was a total of FOURTEEN 5+0 winners. All winning states had a single 5+0 winner, with FL and LA having TWO each.

NY's lottery site is the only to put this information up, (yet they don't mention the Powerplay win).

Some states don't even list the non-jackpot winners at all.

A single Powerplay (3x) 5+0 winner in NM to bring the total to FIFTEEN.

I think the national pari-mutuel system will go into full-effect if/when the 10x Powerplay ever gets hit (JP under $150M).

Here's to ho... [ More ]

I believe the states pay the 2nd prize out of their funds, and each state has a set amount of their choosing in their slush fund. So it would depend on the state you buy tickets in as to what point it goes parimutuel.

With 13 match 5 winners for last night's powerball I am starting to wonder how many there would be for a billion dollar jackpot. It is my understanding that at some point that second prize becomes a pot of money shared among the winners rather than a fixed prize. Anyone have any idea how many winners there would need to be to have that happen
