It would be very expensive for the winner to do so as they would still be responsible to pay the taxes on the winnings. While it would would be reduced some as a charitable write off they would still have to pay about 50% of the taxes due.

Haha, this is a good realistic scenario! The cutoff in mystate for PB tickets is 10:00 P.M. the night of the drawing. The leaves an hour for some newb to buy a ticket and not realize its actually for the next drawing

How about this scenario....The winning ticket was purchased by a newbie on Saturday after Saturday's drawing cut-off and they thought it was a ticket for Saturday night's drawing, but it was actually a ticket for Wednesday's drawing.

When they checked the ticket Saturday night and see it didn't win, they threw it away in the trash.

I'm pretty sure the winner(s) would be the first responders (family, EMT etc) to the scene as they pry the ticket out of their cold dead hand and claim it for their own.
