^Well said! The fact that she lived on the poor side of the spectrum first and didn't learn anything from it makes me not feel a bit sorry for her. On the other hand, I feel for the kids if they are still young. Blowing through hundreds of thousands on bags, unnecessary cars and giving money away are not smart investments. She got to live it up and now she gets to live it down.

He might not be a fool, but both his business acumen and hers are in question. Piecing together what Cynthia's sister and Cynthia herself has said, she was broke, broke, broke. Child services were going to take the kids (whether it's because she was destitute or an issue with prescriptions is up for debate), and it's likely she was going to lose the house they'd been in. The reason she split the jackpot was because she'd been so broke, the father had been giving her money for food.

He had a business which she worked at before the win. I believe he continued to run the business afterwards though he may be up in years and retired. Two of the nephews went to live with him after the jackpot. I think he did/is doing just fine. I sure hope he is. Not easy to run a small business in LACounty these days so if he could do it, he's no fool.

Except that in Trump's case, it was his businesses that filed for bankruptcy...4 times. His personal money was always safe from that gross mismanagement of funds. Cynthia tied up too much of her personal money in her business ventures. Doing that is only great if you succeed, as all the profit is yours. But if you fail, there's no one else's money to cushion the fall.

Capital from where? What business ventures did she create that succeeded? What investments did she make that paid off? She owed over $100,000 in back payments on the house 2 years ago.

Her businesses didn't file for bankruptcy, she did. Had it been just a business loss, she wouldn't be in the mess she's in now. Her only hope is if she put something away in a trust that she'll have access to down the road.

Bankruptcy can be thru one of her many llc's setup. Perhaps equity in her home will be used to cover some debts. I will go out on a limb and say she has other capital under different entities. So I am sure she will overcome this glitch. Didn't see the filings.. so in part its just a sense that she squirrelled someaway ....

She did seem genuine in her causes and caring for her kin.

Money comes and goes.... she has what it takes to survive . Shes been on both sides.

If you did not care to educate yourself on budgeting and finance and follow through with the plan BEFORE a windfall...you probably won't after a windfall

Many of them were not doing that before so that is unlikely to change. In fact, having a large sum of money plopped down in the hands of someone who had not previously had a decent amount of money usually causes people to trend further in the wrong direction. Great rewards only come from great risks. Which is great when it actually happens, but it rarely does. I don't think it's fishy that she said she doubled her money, since there are many people who have done that. It's fishy because she's broke.

She setup a $25M fund for QNP with some minor investors. I don't think it all went in at once but seeped in over several years similar to the Gates' non-profit Also, money went into her boyfriend's fitness business and he headed QNP. There are external costs for movie production which doesn't show up in the IMBD. One of those movies had a cost of $2.5M just to get it to limited release in cinemas and it only made like $20k. She didn't put all her money in QNP. I don't think that's possible since from what I found on imdb about a year ago, QNP has been listed as the producer in just a handful of movies and the contributions appeared to be minor. Plus she took out that mortgage within a couple months of collecting her money. She didn't have time to spend it all yet.

She would have been taxed the highest. Which was 35 % in 2007 for single filing over $350,000. CA has no state tax so she got lucky on that. Cash payment from $112 mill was $66 mill (from USA mega analysis). So she ended up with about $44.5 million. Still a good chunk of money to last her multiple lifetimes. There is no info on how much she gave to her father/ brother. And if she invested $25 mill into her movie production, then that was big mistake.

It's hard to feel sorry for people who don't think rationally. After splitting the money with her father and brother, I think she walked away with around 16 or 17 million, after taxes. You are absolutely correct. This issue here is, she funded her film company with the entire $25M, which explains why she had a mortgage on a home she should have paid for cash in hand. No matter what she did, she still goes broke, given all the movies and projects lost money. I read one movie project had a budget of $20M. Now, multiple other expenses times 9 years. I disagree. I have a feeling that if she had purchased something for half the price, she'd still be in the exact same position she's in now. Let's keep in mind that she never actually bought the house outright. She had a mortgage. But whether she took out a mortgage or owned it, she still shouldn't have been broke within 7 years.

And if she couldn't afford to pay her mortgage in 2014, she shouldn't be driving around in 2 Bentleys in 2016. Just the upkeep and insurance alone would have her hem... [ More ]

Just put the money in the bank and live off the interest. It is really beyond me how people can lose tens of millions of dollars.

You can buy a $200k or $300k home, nice car, take vacations.. Have mini shopping spree the first year with a set limit of $20k.

You can make not one dime in interest and pay yourself $75k a year and STILL have millions when you die 50 years later.

i just don't get it.

These are grown adults so the Lottery has no responsibility on their spending habits and financial management, in fact the lottery does have a guide hand book on there website on what to do if you won the lottery jackpot and in fact she was used as an example in the guide book with her picture in it.

Stafford even said in the segment that she didn't want to splurge her spendings and end up with nothing well that's what happen. Also the powerball was recently at 112 million and no winner.... [ More ]

Sorry to say, Cynthia Stafford filing bankruptcy comes as no surprise. First she and her fiance went shopping for jets. They did not buy one. Then the fiance wanted a bugatti as a wedding gift from his wife. Not sure if he got it. Then she was test driving a Rolls Royce, not sure of that status. These in addition to two Bentleys.

She filed for bankruptcy January 6, adding she made some bad investments. My thinking thats just over-the-top spending.
