I don't think that's necessarily true. Either you're a responsible person with thinking skills or you aren't. I responsible person would take advantage of that time by organizing a trust, hiring attorneys and advisors, etc. An irresponsible person would probably just spend that time spending the money before they even got it anyway.

I personally believe it's smart to wait to come forward and let public interest and media frenzy die off before claiming for at least 3 or 4 months. I would live off my savings during that time and prepare the best and most anonymous way to claim that I possibly could.

With that being said if someone wants to come forward the very next day after winning and claim a major JP that should be their decision to make, not the lottery commissions.

That's easy, if you win a jackpot take some time to cool off before collecting the winnings and the rest of us will decide what is best for US. Opinion is one thing, but most of your ideas place new mandatory restriction on state lotteries that existed and thrived for over 40 years.

No one knows you have a winning ticket unless you tell them. You have 6 months to claim the prize. The money from MM or PB won't be in your state for at least 2 weeks. Take the 2 weeks to find an attorney, a financial advisor, and an accountant. If you can't be anonymous ask your lawyer to create a trust and collect the winnings for you. Again, it is not the job of the lottery to play advisor and psychologist. You want all that you can get it yourself. There is no need to punish the majority who have no issues just because a few idiots go crazy. They are in the minority. Those PB winners on TV? That doesn't prove anything except they are idiots. They're the type that probably would have done it anyway, even if they didn't have to.

Check the news articles in that forum; you'll find many more about shady dealings w/ the lottery than you will about people being harmed for being a JP winner. I am not saying it will stop idiots being idiots. When some people, who haven't had experience handling a large amount of money, can in all the excitement, make bad impulse decisions. A cooling off period would help reduce the risk. While it wouldn't solve everything, it would be a sensible policy.

I misunderstood the question. Since the OP constantly harps on anonymity, I took the cooling off period to mean the lottery wouldn't announce the winner's name for 90 days. Since I now realize it means a winner has to wait to claim, I'm changing my vote to NO .

To me this ideology serves to protect people from themselves and not so sure i agree with it. Many people are responsible and have put thought into things should they win, so why should they have to wait 90 days before enjoying their winnings because others need protecting from their irresponsible behaviors. Yes, I would. A time delay of 90 days would - or should - satisfy those of us who want transparency and should be more than enough time to get those ducks in a row before a winner's name is announced. I also think the time period should start after claiming, not when the JP was won.
