So if you won $700.00 and the lottery office was 200 miles away, would you miss work for a day to drive 400 miles round trip for $700.00? I really think the lottery should accept photocopies of winning tickets. The photocopies would have bar codes on them too, which would be impossible to duplicate. And don't forget, the state and feds would also tax that amount. LOL

Oops...I need to change my vote. I emailed the Wisconsin lottery and they told me that they can only pay-out on an actual ticket . So in other words... DON'T LOSE THAT TICKET! So much for mailing a ticket in.

I do know in the 80's, you may be able to research, but I recall, California paying off on a photocopy. I could be wrong , you should be able to verify.

It says right on the back of the ticket - no photocopies, no counterfeiting, no tampering, no mutilation, etc. I assume they will do whatever they can to avoid paying out a prize. Best to just keep your tickets safe haha.

Has anyone heard about the Australian woman that posted a selfie of herself holding a wining horse race ticket and one of her Facebook friends claimed the prize?

They printed the picture of her holding the ticket and went to a lottery terminal and scanned the picture of the bar code.

When she took the actual ticket to cash, she was told it had already been cashed.

A bar code reader doesn't know the difference between a photo copy or an actual ticket.

I read this. I think a lot of other things really help this person case. A ticket purchase at the same time at the store . Total match where the ticket was buy from the roll. The paper being borrow from another store of the retailer chain, the tape inside the store showing him purchase it. Put it all together, it proof his case.

I remember there was an incident in Texas a few years ago when someone purchased the winning ticket and made a photocopy with a laser printer and somehow alerted the winning ticket. The surveillance footage showed the man buying https://www.lotterypost.com/news/214048 the ticket.

If you had a lottery pool where 10 people had photo copies of say 50 tickets and the winner was lost, all 10 could say they were the one that bought the tickets. Without store camera video proof, who is telling the truth

I'm not sure to be honest, maybe a photocopy would help in the event of a syndicate/pool dispute if you've signed it with the ticket holder

That sounds like the advice you should be relying on. At best a photocopy might prove that somebody stuck the ticket in a photocopier and you're in possession of a copy. I can't see what that would do to establish that you every had possession of the actual ticket or that you own the ticket and are entitled to the prize.

At the very least you're going to need other evidence if you've got any hope of collecting a prize.

Yea. Anyone who mails in a major jackpot ticket needs their head examined. LOL! However, I would still make a photo copy of that ticket and keep it in a safe place....Just in case.

That situation would have to provide very rare and extraordinary circumstances of evidence to over come why one is in possession of a lottery ticket and another is not. I am not saying it hasn't happened, but it would be very hard to over come he said she said in such cases...very hard. wWhich is a great point. How many of y'all get a receipt when buying tickets? I usually do. Just wondering.

Not sure how much having a cash reciept will help but it can't hurt.

Changes were made to US paper currency as printers got more and more advanced.

Remember the recent billion and a half dollar jackpot and the clowns that were claiming to be the winner and posting bogus tickets on the internet

My lottery has verbally told me that the answer would be NO. You must present the actual ticket and only after scanning the bar code is it deemed an authentic winning lottery ticket.
