On Jan 8, 2016, someone won the $165 mil Mega jackpot in Staten Island, NY. To this date, nobody has come forward to claim that ticket.

There's a lot of unclaimed lottery money floating around out there!

I think Illinois says 4 to 6 weeks. Too bad they don't hold off on the publicity for at least that long.

I don't think so; I looked through the calottery website FAQs and didn't see anything. There IS something mentioned on the Powerball FAQ page (about 2/3 down the page under HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET MY MONEY?)

In the it takes about two months to mail out the check article I saw, the reason given was it takes that time to collect the $$$ from all the different States that take part. They were unable to say why it took two months to collect the $$$ in California when it only took half that time (or less) in any other State.

if they are federally insured, then I would think yes.

Our local credit union banks run similar on banking rules.

A friend of mine has your plan when he wins. all cash and a cement vault.

I tend to agree in theory , money in hand , keeps out of the folding of some banking institutions.

The Sec does have parameters for large movement of funds, they are watch dogs for money laundrying and other financial shanigans that business and private citizens seem apt to attempt.

Does the SEC actually have a say in how much money can be released at the time of the deposit? That would put a serious crimp on my banker or Brinks making home deliveries. I realize banks are required to disclose to our trusty government cash withdrawls but what if a winner wants cash initially as I do. So far cash is not refused for purchases.

Here in California, we have district offices throughout the State. About nine total. I will take my jackpot winning ticket to the Fresno Lottery District Office and they will do the initial paperwork. Then that paperwork is mailed to Sacramento, Our Capital, where it will take approximately four weeks to mail the check to either the winner's address or to the local district office where I will pick it up in person.

I have a somewhat crazy theory of what might've happened...

A few times I've had a clerk print a ticket without the powerplay option when I requested to have it. Each time the clerk would want to throw away the incorrect ticket and print another one; each time I'd purchase both tickets to play it safe.

Maybe the winning ticket was placed to the side by a clerk and wasn't purchased by any other customers.

There's also the issue that California takes longer than other States to pay out, I've seen two months mentioned... so even if they came forward tomorrow they wouldn't have a check until July.... yes, California mails out a check, not electronic transfer.

Might have been purchased by a person that has a nice income already and they are just taking a lot of time in putting together a financial adviser tax lawyer and some sort trust fund for family members etc. They also may be hoping that another really big prize amount happens real soon so that it may help take the focus on them. Lol I agree, there is only so long I could wait also. Would hate to think something could happen to me or the ticket. I could wait a couple weeks knowing it takes that long for the funds to hit your account but during that time, searching for the team to be put together.

Beginning to think that third ticket may be lost also. This seems an awful long time for someone to wait, unless of course they are already financially set.

Saylorgirl, I think it becomes different when the jackpot is at a record-breaking amount. Everybody is talking about it for three days or more. Before, on, and after the special day.

You do not have to lie but tell them that you won a smaller amount. Your best friends and family will understand why afterwards.

This tactic is good for the press. Anonymity is best. Try not helping the criminals who will be watching you. Your entire life will change.

Again, I wouldn't be worried even if it was my ticket and I don't think I need to practice in delaying verification. Why, would friends and family even ask if I won the lottery. That doesn't usually come up in normal conversation, how was your weekend? Did you win the lottery?. I don't anticipate being asked nor do I anticipate that I need to lie.

The IRS allows you 60 days from the date you file the claim to choose between the cash value and the annuity. Most states will let you file the claim anytime before the ticket becomes worthless and then follow the IRS rules allowing 60 days to decide between cash and annuity. Technically, the state may still allow you to choose the annuity even if you wait longer, but after 60 days the IRS taxes the winnings as a lump sum, thus requiring that taxes on the full amount be paid in that tax year.

My mom was thinking that an illegal bought the 1/3 billion powerball ticket and they're afraid or don't know how to claim it. Since the TN family and the FL couple claimed their share I was thinking the lucky CA person(s) were taking their sweet time before claiming. But now I'm starting to think that 3rd ticket is lost or saw its doom in a washing machine. However still proud that California participated in the record winning powerball jackpot.

California Lottery should offer a subscription service, just as the New York Lottery have a subscription service.

It would be very convenient and more secure for players. It would also raise additional revenue, as many high-income people are more lightly to subscribe than buy tickets in stores.

The lottery would also get payment in advance and wouldn't have to pay commissions on subscriptions.

I can't imagine that somebody has (or had) the ticket and just never realized it was the winner. If you had bought tickets where the winner was sold do you think you'd fail to notice that the winning numbers were on one of those tickets? If you bought a lot of QP's you might be able to lose one and not even realize it, but I can't imagine having the ticket and failing to realize it.

You'd think they'd notice that the powerball matched and take that to cash it for a few bucks. That's pretty easy to see, at least for me. I occasionally miss a matching white ball, but never a powerball. I know because I scan all of my tickets even if I think they're losers.

I can (sort of) understand how somebody fails to realize they've got a ticket that won $1 million. When you buy a ticket for a jackpot game you're hoping to win the jackpot, and it's fairly easy to more or less ignore the reports about the 2nd place winners.

I know that a few really large prizes have gone unclaimed, but I really can't imagine somebody simply not realizing they have a ticket that will put $200 million in their pocket. That jackpot got an incredibly enormous amount of publicity... [ More ]

It does take some time to make appointments with lawyers, financial advisers, insurance agents, tax attorney, trust and estate attorney, Certified Financial Planner CFP, media specialist, psychologists, MD's , and others.

I believe that California will allow you to request minimal publicity. No press event, no grip and grin photos, no written statements of what you say while doing the paperwork,

They are already required to take installment payments I believe.

I think the Florida winners had to claim within 60 days if they wanted the lump sum, but that's based on Florida lottery rules that only allow the annuity if you wait longer before claiming. I believe California has no such rule, so the IRS rule is the only one that matters, and the IRS allows 60 days from the date you file the claim.

It's been a long time. Honestly by this point, wouldn't an advisor say your losing interest on the money by not claiming it.

They are already required to take installment payments I believe. I know the California lottery says they don't release video anymore of winners to try and bring them forward. For their safety probably.
