It's been said that the best time to move out of the neighbourhood following a Huge jackpot win is after Dark. The only creatures who should be watching you move your stuff are the cats dogs depending where you live, possums and raccoons in the area. You can always count on them to not say a word.

There was a brief story about them on ET late last night. They (the reporter) said they took their time to get their ducks in a row, closed their social media accounts, issued a brief statement, and got out of town to figure out how to manage their new found winnings.

I think they did everything the right way and the way one should do if they won a large amount of money. I saw the picture of their old house and thats it. Haven't seen the new one or even a picture of the couple. Im sure they deleted their social media accounts like facebook, etc.

The Chino Hills winner may have been a high level executive and may have needed some time to transition his/her position to their successor. Most states only allow 180 days to claim and they had the luxury of a year grace period.

I agree most folks would have started enjoying their wealth much sooner but chances are this couple were well of to begin with and made absolutely sure everything was in order prior to coming forward.

It was reported that moving vans showed up at the house on Thursday...and the winners turned the ticket in on Friday...

(I love that!!!)

They were awesome!...None of the neighbors knew what was going on, only that the family was moving....

This family knew to secure an undisclosed location and move away from their current resident BEFORE they turned in the ticket

Nothing to prevent you starting your own 501c3 after dumping a chunk of money into your own charitable trust feeding the 2% a year to your own 501c3. Start a car museum or buy a couple of old aircraft etc. There are rules about benefiting from donations to your own 501c3, but if you aren't paying yourself a wage from the donations you make etc then there are ways around the personal benefit clause. Besides, with the $197M (after taxes), you shouldn't need to pay yourself a wage etc from the 501c... [ More ]

There's some kind of limit on how much you can give in any year as a % of your income, but you could also stick a big fat wedge of your jackpot lump sum into a charitable trust where I think you have to donate a minimum of 2% a year

I have read that the first year as a lottery winner you may be able to save in taxes by giving more to charity and then deducting it. The first year's income will be larger than the following years. I will bring this up with a tax attorney.

The ticket owner is someone who never plays the lottery except when the jackpots are high and checked the wrong drawing. They thought it was a loser and threw it out.

The ticket owner was mugged before the drawing took place. The thief took the cash and credit cards and threw the wallet with the ticket in a dumpster some where.

Sorry, but this won't work.

The ticket is dated. So if you were married on when the day the ticket is purchased. Then 1/2 belongs to your spouse. It doesn't matter if you get divorced after.

Also the courts are way backed up with divorces. It could take longer than a year to get divorced.

If you purchase and win the lotto AFTER you are divorced, then you are in the clear.

You're thinking of Denise Rossi. But that's Cali. Cali is very devoted to the idea of splitting everything in half in a divorce and thus the judge really threw the book at her. In most places the results would be very different.

I read somewhere that a Hedge Fund manager won, but it's probably not true. But then again, the way even rich people were buying up thousands of dollars in tickets out there, who knows!

My guess is that the winner is going through a divorce and is waiting until the gavel falls on the final decree, then they will head straight for lottery HQ (hey, it's been known to happen...).

When the Lottery Officials play the video of the winner purchasing the ticket then all hell will break loose.

How could anyone who played for $1.5 billion lose their ticket?

I watched that movie several yrs. ago and had to turn on the captions.

I just did some quick calculations and if the winner had waited only a month and then claimed (cash option), they could have spent nearly ten million right off the bat, invested the rest fairly conservatively and still earned nearly half a million in the three months since then to now.

My thoughts on the unclaimed ticket is...

the holder of the winning ticket doesn't know they have it (stuck somewhere they forgot about putting it) the ticket was lost or destroyed the person died and the family that cleaned out his stuff threw it away with all their other belongings.

There was also one winner of a $165,000,000 Mega Millions prize on Jan 8 that has been unclaimed as well.

There's a lot of money in unclaimed tickets!

I checked out CA lottery's website.

For PB, a person winning the jackpot has 1 year from the date of the draw to claim their money. All the smaller prizes must be claimed within 180 days.

Rather strange to have it set up that way.

weshar75, There are 44 States plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands that participate in Power Ball.

If the winning ticket is not cashed in within 365 days of the draw then each State, D.C. and the islands will receive the total amount of bets in their own State, D.C., and the islands.

This was back in January when the jackpot was a billion and a half dollars. Three winning tickets were sold, one in Florida, one in Tennessee and one in Chino Hills. The Florida and Tennessee winners have claimed their prize but the Chino Hills winner/winners are MIA.
