It's also based on sales. The sales for both MM and PB have been higher than normal in that the rollovers resulted in more than $5 million and $10 million increases. Since we dont know the sales in California we can only guess. But since California is so large, It would be unusual if the sales werent the norm or higher. Therefore, the 5/5 jackpot should also be higher.

Since its a progressive Pay out the thing to do would be to start playing after a few draws where there is no California winner:

This is the previous draws (08/05 payout): Last California Mega Millions winner before this was on 06/03 - so it took 17 rolls (at a very high Jackpot level to get to this payout....)

A lot of people here play for the 5+0 2nd prize payout and some say they could retire on that. Can you imagine expecting $1 million and getting 1/10th of that and you were the only one that hit it? I am just glad all the other states aren't mimicking California.

A State lottery does not America make. This is a beautiful State, 4 hours from the Bay Area to skiing, l am talking powder. I think we the 7th largest economy in the world. We have Disneyland, the most gorgeous women in the world, sunshine, a drought but l wouldn't trade it for Wisconsin or Nebraska if that's what you asking.

Only the jackpot is accumulated nationally. The 2nd prize on down comes from state funds. So if one state sells a 2nd prize ticket, it comes from that state's reserves. Some states will have a negative reserve if they sell too many non-jackpot winners in a short time frame, but California has decided they will not pay out more than they have after the promised X percent is paid to education. California practices pari-mutuel payouts, based on a California Supreme Court ruling from 1996. The California Lottery had planned to implement keno games, but had to change plans after local natives tribes attempted to sue the lottery stating that keno games were house-banked games and not lottery games. Being a resident of California l am pleased that we at least have a lottery. Its not as liberal especially in that respect. We got MM in the 80's PB many years later. My beef, particularly with last night's drawings is that the bridesmaids prize for MM was $104K yet our very own Fantasy 5 payout was close to half a million. That's the l am trying to come to terms with. How? Something does not add up.

I still don't understand. Call me stupid I don't care. Mega millions is a multi-state game. All proceeds are accumulated with that particular lottery game fund. So how does California get to decide the payouts

Because California has its own rules and regulations. So yes it is legal in California to pay out parimutuel. I believe they are the only state that pays out like this

i hate the pari mutuel cali lotto system . hitting 5 numbers should be a million minimum for the odds in this game. unfortunate scenario for the person in san jose . yeah he still won 75 grand but must be bittersweet either way knowing that someone last week iirc won close to 2 million before taxes for hitting 5 numbers .

You're forgetting taxes, the winner will get paid a little over 75 thousand while the Florida winner will walk away with almost 10 times that amount.

In simplest terms, it is a system of gaming in which wagered funds are pooled and then paid, in equal shares.

The Powerball 5+0 winner 08-06 only got $241,411.

How about the jumping up and down the night before knowing that you are one of two who got 2nd prize only to find out that you walking away with less money than the fantasy 5 payout on the same evening?
