He's in California. He doesnt need the ticket. California use to have 2 second chance drawings -- a weekly one and an end of game one where they offered one top prize what ever it was. Since it took years for the end of game second chance drawings people would have had to save all their scratcher tickets for that game for years. Not exactly practical. Unfortunately, they did away with the end of game drawings.

Most of the 2nd chance games here in Georgia require the ticket. Be sure to read the rules to find out if you have to present the actual ticket. In South Carolina you don't have to have it.

I can not imagine the horror of being a winner and not being able to claim a million dollars because you don't have the actual ticket! (Or what ever the prize for a particular drawing

If you check the weekly Results and Winners, they get over 19 million entries a week on scratchers.

As to torn tickets, the numbers you need are usually very near each other .

Interesting. Calif has recently did something similar. They had a second chance drawing for a $40k prize. It also lasted about 5 weeks. Depending on the price of the scratcher you received entry points. This resulted in 60 million entries for the second chance drawing.

They did a promo for our state lottery for 4 weeks where you got a weekly raffle ticket for a $500 prize.

A couple of years ago, a lot less people entered these second chance contest and the odds were better. Someone here

I bet the people who win only enter a few codes.lol.. Seems to be the way of the Universe. We in CA are allowed 500 codes for scratchers per month. I made 500 mostly from thrown away tickets..I still haven't won. In one week I had over 2000 entries due to some tickets having extra points.. So expected to win, but with over a million entries it's still a fat chance.. I won't give up though..odds are still better than the scratchers themselves.

Oh I know, I do sometimes take the torn up pieces but sometimes there are way too many that it isn't worth it. The person who tears them up makes sure (it sseems) that the two codes needed are not on the same piece. If I scanned then all i'd need would be the scan code but I don't scan..

Our state lottery just finished a promo giving away $1000 per week for 8 weeks in a 2nd chance. It included all games with hot in the name. I play Hot Lotto so I entered my few losers, then saw some discarded hot scratch tickets at a scratch station. I kinda got caught up in finding thrown away tickets and was able to enter 20 - 30 per week thru the whole promo. Didn't win a thing. But I was pretty surprised at the number of people who discard losers instead of entering the 2nd chance.

I used to be the same way, but then thought, hey, it's trash, not like I'm stealing anything. Sure, you may get strange looks, but I've become immune to that Some people cannot be bothered with entering points. In NC and perhaps in most of the states with these drawings, the more expensive the ticket, the higher the points, and I usually don't buy tickets over $5. Sitting on the counter next to the scanner. Some places put a small bucket near the scanner for people to put their discarded scratchers in. I use to buy MM/PB at a liquor store and they wd have several buckets filled with discarded scratchers. At the time I didnt know about second chance.

This morning someone discarded about 70 $5 scratchers. So I scooped them up and will enter them - maybe 10 per week. IMHO, better to be in each second chance drawing than enter them all at once.

I have changed my mind about entering tickets for the 2nd chance drawing.

I have entered all of my non-winning tickets and will do so for any tickets I find or pick up at the store.

It doesn't hurt to enter in the 2nd chance drawings. I suspect people are entering a lot with tickets they've found. You never know you might win.

I absolutely LOVE second chance drawings! Aside from the $20,000 tax free money that I won, I have won some very nice prizes like a stereo system, hammock w/stand, camping gear, a Michael Kors watch, gold/diamond ear rings, stuff for my pets, etc. The list of things I've won is long and very, very much appreciated

The vast majority of players lose more than the win over the course of a year. It's not worth the effort for the IRS to track non-reported under $600 wins. Furthermore, claiming one's losses equals / exceeds their winnings to reduce tax liability is often accepted with few to no questions by the IRS for modest amounts. What is considered modest depends on many factors, but in my view, $25,000 or less of reportable wins over the course of a year is likely a good benchmark.

I just had a thought.

Is the second change entry just another way for the state / I.R.S. to track how much you spend on lottery tickets and then can compare it to your income tax return to see if you're not reporting unearned income?

After all, most people don't report winnings under the $600 threshold when (and if) they win.

Just something to think about.

Wadda ya know...NYS now has a second chance drawing for all non-winning tickets. instant tickets and draw games.

Qualifying tickets are any unclaimed draw game tickets purchased within the last 60 days and eligible (see list) non-winning scratch-off tickets from the New York Lottery.

I'm in CA and we get second chance on 5 dollar purchaes on fantasy 5 and any superlotto purchase. I enter over 100 codes a week cause I pick the trash next to the scratch ticket vending machines...lol. I haven't won yet. Oh and picking the trash pays off. Well one day I found 180.00 worth of winning tickets.. I was soooo excited..i took them home and entered codes and sure enough they were winners.. In NC, you can enter all type of tickets, not only scratch. Each $1 amount is worth at least 1 point, sometimes more. These points can be used for other promotions, outside of the 2nd chance drawings. Some people get confused, and don't realize that the other weekly and monthly drawings are different, and that they have to not only enter the tickets, but use their accumulated points towards drawings.
