Lol yeah BigDMike! First 'job' I ever had was opening doors when I was 6 or 7 years old! Used to get pennies for it! Holding out my hand lol at 7 years old! Just thinking about the pharmacy on the corner, and the GI Joe's they also used to have, hoping I'd get enough to get just one! LOL! The old ladies, they were always the nicest. Always. Assuming that you mean by the purchaser/customer...A simple thank you should do it. The clerk did their job...Just as if they sold me a bag of chips. I'd be more motivated to tip the guy that offered to hold the door, pump my gas or clean my rims. They don't have a job description to reference. Of course, with a kind gesture in return...NEVER cash. They won't get the opportunity to snort, inhale, inject or swallow my money! Clerks don't work for tips...As far as I know.

Depends if I'm familiar with the clerk. If the ticket is purchased out of town/state than the chances are no but if it's a local person that I have dealt with prior then yes.

I've seen people tip $50 for 1 straight ticket etc. If the guy tells me that someone bought 7 $10 scratch offs in a row and nothing, and tells me to take the next 2, and they have say $75 on them. Yeah I've given the guy $5 bucks and said thank you. Again, there's no demand for a tip, but it's whatever you think is right. You can't take it with you, and those guys do travel alot and work in different stores alot, so it's not like they set and comfortable etc.

I have worked at a few retail stores, and one part of the training, at every store, I remember is that it is against company policy to accept tips, favors, etc. from customers. I don't remember why, but that's the way it was. That being said, I agree with the no tip and store avoidance sentiment previously expressed. I would have to go back and tip A LOT of people to be fair to all past cashiers, and it would take a really long time to do that.

Most stores do it the same way out here on the West Coast as well Coin. Whether it's a Safeway, Cvs, Walgreens or other- it's one counter for everything, and it's first come first served.Never seen anyone cut in line though.

I'll give one example, I live in a rural area and usually play at one of two grocery stores. Both stores do their lotto at the customer service counter which also does money orders, Western Union, etc....

At one store the clerk knows who the lottery players are and when people are busy filling out their Western Union paperwork she asks the players what they want for lotto.

Deserving of a tip? I'd say so.

The jackpot is determined strictly be sales in the case of most online games, and for other games it's determined by some other method that takes no account of any bonus paid to the retailer. The store gets that money, not the clerk usually.

My answer to the OP is that it depends. If the clerk that sold it even once acted like I was bothering them for wanting tickets or made a comment about wasting money or asked me to share with them even jokingly, or anything like that, I would tip nothing.

If the clerk was always friendly and helpful, then I'd tip them. The amount depends on how long I've known them. The two that I usually to go to would get $14K of any win larger than 5 mil... [ More ]

I have seen that the lottery will take the photo of the winner holding the large check inside the store where the winner purchased the ticket. That is for publicity for the store to boost business.

So, it would be hard for the store owner not to know who the winner was, but I suppose you could ask for the press conference (if necessary) to be held somewhere else.

A little over a year or so ago, the owner of a convenient store in Milpitas CA took a customer to court because he said that she promised him close to half a million from a winning million dollar scratcher ticket she purchased from his store . While it could be a nice gesture to reward the clerk, the result may not be a thank you, but rather resentment for not tipping more. Or even worse, getting roped into a legal dispute. Possibly $500 per $10M won. That is a big range. I know.
